‘Blade Runner 2099’ First Trailer Finally Brings Michelle Yeoh And Hunter Schafer Into Ridley Scott’s Future
The ‘Blade Runner’ universe has been quiet on screens for nearly a decade, ever since Denis Villeneuve closed out the story of Rick Deckard and the replicant blade runner K in ‘Blade Runner 2049.’ Fans have spent years wondering what direction the franchise would take next, especially with Ridley Scott still shepherding the mythology behind the scenes. That wait is finally coming to an end.
Prime Video has now dropped the first full trailer for ‘Blade Runner 2099,’ confirming the show marks the franchise’s return nine years after the release of ‘Blade Runner 2049.’ The clip has given fans their first proper look at how this new chapter connects to the world Scott built more than four decades ago.
Leading the cast are Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer, with the limited series unfolding after the events of both the original ‘Blade Runner’ and ‘Blade Runner 2049.’ Yeoh plays Olwen, a replicant confronting the end of her life, while Schafer takes on the role of Cora, a human being hunted by blade runners. The trailer shows the pair forming an unlikely alliance in the middle of an escalating war between humans and replicants.
The story pushes the timeline well beyond anything seen in the films, and the fallout from that war has reshaped the entire social order of this future Los Angeles. Showrunner Silka Luisa has described the shift bluntly, explaining that between ‘Blade Runner 2049’ and ‘Blade Runner 2099,’ the war has happened, and the humans have lost, calling it their worst fears imagined. She added that replicants are now the power brokers of the city, while humans have been pushed down to second class citizens.
That inversion of power gives the series a distinctly different flavor from its predecessors, trading the noir mystery of the earlier films for something closer to a fractured, post revolution society. Yeoh’s Olwen carries echoes of Roy Batty’s arc from the original ‘Blade Runner,’ a connection writer Silka Luisa has confirmed directly. Schafer’s Cora offers a mirror image, a human forced to disguise herself as the very thing she has spent her life fleeing.
Ridley Scott’s fingerprints are all over the project despite him not directing every episode himself. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Luisa revealed that Scott and ‘Blade Runner 2049’ writer Michael Green were both closely involved in shaping the series, with Scott actively participating throughout development to make sure the new story respected the mythology first established in the 1982 original.
The supporting cast rounds out an ensemble built for a sprawling future noir, with Yeoh and Schafer joined by series regulars Dimitri Abold and Lewis Gribben, alongside guest stars including Katelyn Rose Downey, Daniel Rigby, Johnny Harris, Amy Lennox, Sheila Atim and Matthew Needham. Production reportedly took the team far from Los Angeles entirely, with much of the series filmed overseas to build its next generation cityscape from scratch.
‘Blade Runner 2099’ is set to premiere on Prime Video on November 25, giving fans a firm date to circle after years of anticipation. With Yeoh and Schafer anchoring a story about power, survival and what happens when the old order finally collapses, this feels like the boldest swing the franchise has taken since Scott first imagined it.
