Bonnie Hill Cast as Ginny Weasley in HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Season 2 Recast
Casting a beloved literary character always comes with pressure, but recasting one carries an entirely different kind of scrutiny. That change has now been confirmed. Bonnie Hill has been cast as Ginny Weasley for Season 2 of HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ series, stepping into a role previously played by Gracie Cochrane in Season 1.
The recasting comes after Cochrane announced she would not be returning to the role following the first season. A joint statement from Cochrane and her family explained the decision at the time, saying, “Due to unforeseen circumstances, Gracie has made the challenging decision to step away from her role as Ginny Weasley in the HBO ‘Harry Potter’ series after Season 1,” according to a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter. The statement added that her time in the franchise had been “truly wonderful” and that she remained grateful to casting director Lucy Bevan and the wider production team.
Hill arrives in the role as the least established of the three major Season 2 casting additions revealed alongside her, with credits that include ‘The Six Triple Eight,’ ‘Film Club’ and ‘Girl Troop versus Aliens’ on the BBC. While her résumé is still developing compared to some of her new castmates, the role of Ginny represents a major opportunity for the young actress to step into one of the franchise’s most emotionally significant arcs.
Hill’s casting was announced alongside two other major Season 2 additions: Billy Barratt as young Tom Riddle and Lenny Rush as Dobby.
