‘Booster Gold’ Isn’t Dead, But DC Studios May Be Putting Movies First
DC Studios has spent the better part of three years juggling an ambitious slate that spans theaters and streaming alike, and lately that balancing act has looked shakier than fans might like. Between box office swings and a flurry of behind the scenes shakeups, the studio led by James Gunn and Peter Safran has had to make hard calls about where its energy actually goes. That tension has only grown louder as 2026 rolls on.
The DCU’s television arm in particular has taken some bruising hits recently. Writer David Jenkins announced that his version of ‘Booster Gold‘ would not be moving forward at DC Studios and HBO Max, a project that had been first announced back in January 2023 as part of Gunn’s original Chapter One slate. Jenkins had actually delivered his pilot script back in June before the plug was pulled, leaving fans stunned by how quickly the show went from finished draft to scrapped.
According to Superman Saga News on X, citing a new report from The Ankler, DC Studios is reportedly shifting its focus and priority toward theatrical films rather than HBO series going forward. The same post notes that DC Studios and HBO remain very set on making ‘Booster Gold’ happen and are currently searching for new writers to lead the project. The Ankler’s report details how Gunn and Safran collaborated with HBO chief Casey Bloys in deciding the fate of the show, painting the decision as a deliberate creative pivot rather than a quiet cancellation.
The character at the center of it all is Michael Jon Carter, a disgraced 25th century athlete who steals futuristic technology to travel back in time and pose as a superhero. Gunn has previously described the concept as essentially imposter syndrome as a superhero, a satirical premise that has kept the project on the studio’s radar despite repeated turnover behind the scenes. With HBO Max still committed to the concept and a search now underway for a new writer, ‘Booster Gold’ joins projects like ‘Paradise Lost’ and ‘Lanterns’ as part of DC’s ongoing television slate.
The timing adds extra weight to the theatrical pivot angle. Reports have surfaced that Paramount could place restrictions on Warner Bros properties following its acquisition, and Supergirl’s rocky box office performance has only added more pressure on future DC releases like ‘Clayface’ and ‘Man of Tomorrow’. ‘Clayface’ itself is set to arrive September 11, 2026, giving the studio another theatrical swing to prove where its priorities truly lie.
Whatever direction DC Studios ultimately takes, ‘Booster Gold’ fans have been asked to wait through more false starts than almost any other DCU project.
