‘Boston Blue’ Season 2, Episode 5 Recap & Ending Explained: Jamie Reagan Finally Understands Why Danny Left New York
When ‘Blue Bloods’ wrapped its 14-season run in December 2024, fans were left wondering how long the Reagan family would stay scattered across the map. ‘Boston Blue‘ has answered that question one visit at a time, with Erin and Grandpa Henry already making trips to Beantown. The spinoff, which airs Fridays on CBS and streams on Paramount+, has leaned on those family reunions to keep its heart beating.
Danny Reagan’s move to Boston was always going to leave some bruised feelings behind in New York. Season 2 is the first time the show has fully reckoned with that, and Episode 5, titled ‘Blood Diamonds’, finally puts the biggest hurt on screen.
A Diamond Heist Brings Jamie Reagan to Boston
Will Estes made his debut on the spinoff in Season 2, Episode 5 on Nov. 6 on CBS. Jamie arrives in Boston for a lieutenants’ conference, and the tension starts immediately. The episode reveals that Jamie has been promoted to lieutenant since ‘Blue Bloods’ ended, which means he outranks his big brother, a sergeant detective. Danny’s son Sean loves watching his dad take orders from his little brother.
The reunion is tense almost from the start. Jamie has been harboring resentment over Danny leaving New York just as he became a first-time father. It finally boils over when Jamie tells Danny he left, and Danny realizes this is what Erin meant on her earlier visit, when she said the family back home was upset about the move.
The brothers are soon drawn into a case about a diamond heist linked to a violent family feud, with two brothers seeking vengeance for their sister. Jamie reaches one of them by mentioning that he and Danny lost a brother, Joe, which gets them the weapons location.
The Rooftop Showdown and the Ending Explained
The case ends in a tense confrontation where a man fires a rocket launcher, but Jamie runs in and knocks his aim off, so no one is injured. It is a classic action beat, but the real payoff comes in the quiet scenes that follow.
In a hospital conversation, Jamie speaks in coded language about what his brother means to him. Later, on the rooftop, Danny says the two of them were always doing the best they could as brothers. After the case, Jamie admits he had pictured his son growing up with Uncle Danny close by, and that he felt abandoned.
The episode closes with a Silver family Shabbat dinner, where Danny tells Jamie he is proud of him as a brother, a cop and now a dad. Jamie says he understands why Danny and Sean love Boston, citing family dinners, good food and bad jokes. Danny agrees that the city is starting to feel like home.
Will Estes on the Reunion
Estes says the scenes with Donnie Wahlberg carried real emotion. Speaking to TVLine, he said reconnecting with his co-star and telling this story felt like “therapy,” and that some of what played out on screen echoed life off screen. He also said he would happily return to the series.
The return was not stress-free. Estes admitted to TV Insider that he was “terrified” to step back into the world of ‘Blue Bloods’ alongside Wahlberg. He said the scenes let him and Wahlberg resolve character conflicts they always wanted to address.

Subplots in Boston
The brothers were not the only story in Boston this week. Mae was set to take on a case after a swatting incident leaves a man dead, Lena investigated suspicious deaths connected to one of Reverend Peters’ parishioners, and Sarah and Seth hit a snag while planning their wedding.
Tonight on Boston Blue the Reagan boys are back together again doing what they do best ,investigating crimes and bickering. Don’t Miss It ! #bostonblue #dannyreagan #donniewahlberg @CBSTVStudios @DonnieWahlberg @shinybootz https://t.co/4Vd69SSLrI

What the Episode Means for the Rest of Season 2
The Jamie storyline gives ‘Boston Blue’ something it has needed, a clear acknowledgment that leaving New York came with a cost. By the end of the hour, Danny has heard his younger brother’s pain and Jamie has accepted his choice. That emotional closure should let the series move forward without carrying the same unresolved tension.
Season 2 began on Oct. 9, and episodes continue airing Fridays at 10 p.m. ET on CBS. Estes also said he does not see why a Jamie and Eddie reunion should not spark that conversation, so a future visit looks like a real possibility.
