Masters of the Universe is having a very rough second weekend at the box office, and the numbers are now putting the film in serious trouble.

According to box office reporting and industry tracking data from trade sources, the movie dropped 71% in domestic ticket sales during its second weekend. It earned about 8.6 million dollars, falling sharply from its opening. The total domestic gross now sits at around 45.7 million dollars, while worldwide earnings are just over 70 million dollars.

The problem is the budget. The film reportedly cost close to 200 million dollars to produce. On top of that, marketing costs push the total spending even higher. With these numbers, the movie is now being described in industry reports as tracking toward one of the biggest box office losses in recent years.

The film is an adaptation of the 1980s Mattel toy line and cartoon franchise. It was expected to bring in both nostalgia audiences and younger viewers, but early data suggests the audience is not expanding beyond a smaller core group. Reports indicate that most of the viewers are older fans, with limited growth in younger demographics.

This weak turnout is showing up clearly in its weekend performance. After a normal opening, the sharp drop in its second weekend suggests the movie is struggling with word of mouth. When a film falls by more than 70% in its second weekend, it often signals that interest is fading quickly after initial fans have already seen it.

At the same time, competition in theaters is strong. Other films like Obsession and Backrooms are holding better over multiple weeks, while new releases are also pulling attention away from Masters of the Universe. That leaves it in a difficult position going forward, with fewer chances to recover its costs.

Industry coverage of the box office also points out that other big-budget films are facing similar problems, but Masters of the Universe stands out because of its high production cost. Even films with lower budgets can survive a steep drop, but a nearly 200 million dollar movie needs strong and steady global performance to avoid major losses.

There has been no official statement from the studio about the performance, but analysts quoted in box office reports say the current trend is concerning. One of the main issues is that the film needed a much stronger second weekend hold to stay on track for profitability.

The movie’s situation is being compared to other recent big-budget releases that failed to connect with wide audiences. While some films can recover through international markets or strong long-term runs, early indicators for Masters of the Universe suggest that path is becoming harder.

Even with its recognizable brand name, the film has not been able to turn nostalgia into sustained ticket sales. The international numbers are also not strong enough so far to balance out the domestic drop.

As of now, the film continues to slide down the box office rankings, sitting behind other ongoing releases that are showing better staying power. If the current trend continues, the gap between its total earnings and its production cost will remain very large.
