Few festivals combine glamour and cinephile credibility like San Sebastián. This year’s 74th edition, running September 18 to 26 in Spain’s Basque Country, has drawn a guest list that includes Naomi Watts, Penélope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons and Rami Malek. Brad Pitt is also on that list, and his return has been one of the festival’s biggest talking points.

It’s his first visit since 2009, when he presented ‘Inglourious Basterds’ alongside Quentin Tarantino. This time he brought ‘Heart of the Beast,’ the Paramount survival thriller from director David Ayer, which screened out of competition. Pitt also joined Ayer and producer Olivia Hamilton for a press event earlier in the day.

That evening, the spotlight moved to the red carpet. Pitt and his girlfriend, Ines de Ramon, attended the ‘Heart of the Beast’ screening on Wednesday, September 23, in a moment TMZ shared online. Pitt, 62, wore a black suit, while de Ramon chose a green dress with sheer detailing.

De Ramon’s look drew plenty of attention. She wore a forest-green lace gown with a structured plunging neckline, delicate straps and a sheer skirt, and she kept her jewelry minimal. It was a contrast to her earlier look on the tour, a peach lace-trimmed gown at the film’s global premiere.

That premiere took place on September 16 in Franklin, Tennessee, and the pair were photographed holding hands throughout the evening. San Sebastián marks their second joint appearance on the press tour. At the Tennessee event, Pitt also talked about his own dogs and revealed he had recently added a rescue to his household.

The pair are no strangers to festival red carpets. They made their red carpet debut at the 2024 Venice Film Festival for the premiere of ‘Wolfs,’ and they have been described as dating since 2022. De Ramon is a jewelry executive who has served as vice president of the Los Angeles-based brand Anita Ko since January 2020.

The film is a lean survival story. Pitt plays James Belmont, a retired Special Forces officer who flies a small plane through the Alaskan mountains with Odin, his battle-scarred German Shepherd. After a harrowing plane crash, the pair are stranded in the wilderness and forced into a brutal fight against the elements.

‘Heart of the Beast’ reunites Pitt with Ayer for the first time since 2014’s ‘Fury.’ The screenplay is by Cameron Alexander, and the cast includes J.K. Simmons and Anna Lambe, with Damien Chazelle among the executive producers. New Zealand stands in for Alaska, and the movie runs 101 minutes with a PG-13 rating.

Early reviews have been mixed, though many single out the leading pair. Variety praised Pitt’s performance and said the dog playing Odin, an animal actor named Uber, delivers one of the most affecting canine turns in years. Deadline called it an emotional roller coaster, while the Hollywood Reporter admitted the film can feel repetitive in its pile-up of perilous moments but said Ayer’s direction and quick pace prevent monotony.

Others were more reserved. IndieWire said the film reminds you that Pitt is still a movie star but argued that its lack of backstory and its late-act didacticism hold it back. That range of opinion suggests the film’s appeal may come down to how much viewers connect with its simple man-and-dog story.
