Britney Spears’ upcoming biopic is taking another major step forward, with a new writer joining the project. According to Page Six, screenwriter Liz Meriwether has been brought in to work on an early draft of the film, adding another major creative name to the highly anticipated project.

Meriwether is known for her work in both television and film. She created the popular comedy series New Girl and also wrote the screenplay for the romantic comedy No Strings Attached. Her recent television credits include projects such as Dying For Sex and The Dropout, making her the latest addition to a team that already includes Wicked director Jon M. Chu and producer Marc Platt.

The Britney Spears biopic will be based on the singer’s bestselling 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me. The book became a major success, becoming the fastest-selling memoir in Simon & Schuster’s history and selling millions of copies worldwide. It also spent time at the top of bestseller lists after its release.

Spears’ memoir tells the story of her rise from a young performer in Louisiana to one of the biggest pop stars in the world. It also explores the difficult moments in her personal life, including her relationships, the intense media attention surrounding her career, and the controversial conservatorship that controlled many parts of her life for 13 years.

Hollywood studios showed strong interest in adapting the memoir before Universal Pictures secured the rights. Several major companies reportedly competed for the project, including Netflix, Disney, Warner Bros., Sony, and others.

The addition of Meriwether comes as interest in music biopics continues to grow. The success of recent films about major artists has shown that audiences remain interested in behind-the-scenes stories about famous musicians and their personal journeys. The Michael Jackson biopic Michael became one of the biggest biographical films ever released, increasing excitement around other upcoming music-focused projects.

Jon M. Chu has been attached to direct the Britney Spears film since 2024, while Marc Platt is producing. The pair previously worked together on Wicked, making their collaboration with Meriwether a major creative combination for the project.
