Broadway Star Maya Boyd Is Marvel’s New Storm, and Nobody Saw It Coming

Marvel’s long-awaited ‘X-Men‘ reboot has spent months fueling one of the most active casting rumor mills in recent memory, with fans debating every possible name for roles ranging from Wolverine to Professor X. That speculation reached a fever pitch once poster art for D23 quietly slipped Storm’s silhouette in alongside Spider-Man and Sue Storm just days before the convention, sending the internet into a full-blown guessing game about who might finally take on the role.

Names cycled through the rumor mill for weeks leading up to the reveal. Jayme Lawson, fresh off her breakout in ‘Sinners,’ became the fandom’s default pick for the role, before scooper Jeff Sneider floated ‘Poor Things’ actress Suzy Bemba as a late curveball just a day before the panel. Neither name ended up mattering once the actual announcement came.

During Marvel’s D23 presentation on Friday night in Anaheim, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige revealed that Broadway performer Maya Boyd will play Storm, marking the character’s live-action return following portrayals by Halle Berry across four films between 2000 and 2014, and Alexandra Shipp in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ and ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix.’ According to Blex Media, Boyd wasn’t even on the fan-casting radar until she walked out under the lights alongside her new castmates.

Boyd’s casting marks her feature film debut, a striking leap for an actress best known until now for her work in musical theater. She built her Broadway resume through productions of ‘&Juliet,’ ‘Joe Turner’s Come and Gone’ alongside Taraji P. Henson, and ‘Merrily We Roll Along,’ which marked her New York stage debut back in 2023 while she was still completing her degree at the University of Michigan. She departed ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ to take over the title role in ‘&Juliet,’ performing the part eight times a week before her Marvel casting was announced.

Boyd joins an ensemble that Marvel unveiled together on stage, including Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, and Inde Navarrette as Rogue. Adam Driver also joined the cast lineup through a video appearance, confirmed to play the villainous Nathaniel Milbury, known in the comics as Mister Sinister.

Feige made clear this represents only the first wave of casting, with more announcements still expected as production ramps up. Director Jake Schreier, fresh off ‘Thunderbolts*,’ is working from a script by ‘Beef’ creator Lee Sung Jin and ‘The Bear’ co-creator Joanna Calo, with the film set for release on May 5, 2028.

It remains unclear exactly when audiences will first see Boyd in the role. Sink got an early introduction as Jean Grey in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ months before the X-Men lineup was even confirmed, and speculation has already started building around whether Boyd’s Storm might get a similar soft launch, with some fans pointing to Ryan Coogler’s ‘Black Panther 3’ as a possible venue. Marvel has not confirmed anything along those lines.

Following the news, Boyd’s own social media presence saw a rapid surge, with her Instagram follower count climbing to nearly 100,000 accounts shortly after the announcement went public. With the X-Men not having assembled on screen since Fox’s 2019 film ‘Dark Phoenix,’ which starred James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Jennifer Lawrence, Boyd’s casting represents a genuine leap of faith for Marvel, betting on an unknown talent to anchor one of its most beloved characters.
