Horror fans have plenty of new reasons to be excited this fall, and the genre’s love affair with weaponized nostalgia just found its most unsettling target yet. A new teaser has arrived for a film that takes the wholesome, sugary world of children’s television and twists it into something genuinely disturbing.

Buddy‘ first made waves at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, where it premiered in the Midnight section and quickly built buzz among horror audiences for its wildly original premise. The film comes from director Casper Kelly, best known for the viral 2014 Adult Swim short ‘Too Many Cooks’, a genre-bending piece that similarly took a wrecking ball to nostalgic television tropes.

That same sensibility is now driving ‘Buddy’, which centers on a fictional children’s show called ‘It’s Buddy!’ hosted by a bright orange, humanoid unicorn with a purple heart on his chest. According to the official synopsis, a group of children spend their days singing and dancing alongside Buddy until one child refuses to play along, sending cracks through what initially seems like a perfectly cheerful world.

The film stars Cristin Milioti, Topher Grace, Keegan-Michael Key, and Michael Shannon, with the new teaser giving audiences their first unsettling glimpse into the show’s descent from wholesome to horrifying. Milioti plays Grace, a suburban mother pulled into Buddy’s nightmare after a mysterious connection surfaces between the fictional show and unresolved trauma in her own life, while Key voices the titular unicorn and Grace joins the cast as her husband Ben.

Speaking to The Wrap while promoting the film at Sundance, Milioti explained that part of the appeal of joining ‘Buddy’ was wanting something different after more emotionally heavy projects like ‘The Penguin’ and the seventh season of ‘Black Mirror’. She said she was specifically looking for something lighter, and that the tone of this particular project felt exactly like that kind of change of pace for her.

Kelly has also spoken about how personal the theatrical release of the film feels to him, noting in comments shared through Bloody Disgusting that he made the film specifically to be experienced on the big screen and expressing gratitude that audiences everywhere would finally get that chance. Saban Films co-presidents Jonathan Saba and Shanan Becker echoed that enthusiasm, praising Kelly as one of the most inventive and audacious filmmakers working today.

Critical reaction out of Sundance has been largely positive, with the film currently sitting at 84 percent on Rotten Tomatoes based on early reviews. Some critics have noted that the premise, while inventive, occasionally leans more on style than substance, describing the film as colorful and cute but not always as fully fleshed out as its ambitious concept promises.

Beyond its central cast, the film features a supporting lineup that leans further into its unsettling children’s entertainment universe, including Patton Oswalt voicing an anthropomorphic backpack named Strappy and Clint Howard playing a grizzled cowboy puppeteer alongside Shannon’s ventriloquist dummy character. That blend of practical effects-driven creature work and pitch-black horror comedy has become one of the film’s most talked-about elements since its festival debut.

Roadside Attractions and Saban Films acquired North American distribution rights to the film back in April, positioning it as one of the more distinctive genre offerings heading into the fall movie season. With its blend of Barney-style children’s programming satire and full-blown horror dread, ‘Buddy’ is shaping up to be one of those rare festival darlings that manages to carry its buzz all the way into a wide theatrical release.
