Canceled Sci-Fi Show Hits Netflix’s Top 10
A canceled British sci-fi show, The Lazarus Project, is making waves again, climbing to #6 on Netflix’s Top 10 chart despite getting the axe last year after two seasons. This time-loop thriller created by Joe Barton and starring Paapa Essiedu has found new life with streaming audiences.
The Lazarus Project, originally called Extinction, first hit screens on June 16, 2022. It follows George, played by Essiedu, a guy with a rare gene that lets him relive the same day to stop disasters. He’s part of a secret group called the Lazarus Project, led by Elisabeth “Wes” Wesley (Caroline Quentin), which uses time resets to prevent apocalypses. The cast includes Anjli Mohindra as Archie, a team member who gets a time-loop serum, and Rudi Dharmalingam as Shiv, another gene carrier. Charly Clive plays Sarah, George’s wife, who later becomes part of the mission.
Other key players are Tom Burke as Rebrov, a rogue ex-agent who thinks humanity wants destruction, and Brian Gleeson as Ross, Archie’s lover who dies saving the world. The show was renewed for a second season, which aired on November 15, 2023, but was canceled in March 2024, leaving fans gutted. Critics have praised the show’s wild concept and strong acting.
On Rotten Tomatoes, it boasts a perfect 100% approval rating.
The series even snagged a Best Special Effects award at the 2022 Royal Television Society Craft & Design Awards, and Essiedu earned a Best Leading Actor nod at the 2024 British Academy Television Awards.
The show’s recent surge on Netflix has fans buzzing, especially since it was canceled after just two seasons. The story’s mix of time loops, moral dilemmas, and high-stakes action seems to have hooked a new crowd. Social media is full of viewers begging for a third season, hoping Netflix might revive it.
For now, there’s no word on bringing it back, but its Top 10 spot shows it’s still got a loyal following. If you haven’t checked out The Lazarus Project yet, it’s a fun, twisty sci-fi ride worth streaming while it’s trending. Who knows, maybe the fans’ love will give this canceled gem another shot at saving the world.
