Cate Blanchett Talks Squid Game U.S. Spinoff: “I Am Wildly Open to Anything”
Cate Blanchett’s surprise cameo in the finale of Squid Game’s latest season has sparked excitement about a possible American spinoff of the hit series.
According to Deadline Hollywood, an English-language adaptation of Squid Game for Netflix is in the works, produced by David Fincher. Blanchett’s appearance in Los Angeles as a recruiter playing ddakji seemed to hint at this upcoming U.S.-based series.
Blanchett spoke about her experience filming the finale, explaining that it was a secretive and fast-paced job.
She told reporters, “Because it’s such a cult series and they were shooting in L.A. of all places, everyone was on a need-to-know basis. I got a couple of storyboards. I had to [learn to] play the game very quickly. I had to practice and practice. I knew there were four or five setups that they were going to do, and I knew what they needed from every shot, and then I was given the sides. But it was one of the more mysterious jobs.”
Blanchett also addressed whether she might return for the American spinoff. She praised the show’s world-building and expressed interest in working with David Fincher again, recalling their time together on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
“I am wildly open to anything. And in a world that is so beautifully, magically created like that, for sure. They’re amazing world-builders, and that series has been eaten alive. I don’t think there’s a corner of the globe that it hasn’t touched in some way. I mean, I’d love to work with David [Fincher] again. It’s been ages. But no, I don’t know anything more than you do. I’m not being coy. I really don’t,” she said.
Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has also hinted that more content could be coming, though he remains vague about whether Season 4 will happen. He told Good Morning America, “There’s a saying, ‘Never say never.’ Yeah, I never close the door… we will see. It’s still up in the air.” The Season 3 finale wrapped up the story of main character Seong Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, but left open questions and hints at further stories, including the potential U.S. spinoff.
Netflix appears eager to expand the Squid Game universe. In addition to the main series, they have approved another season of Squid Game: The Challenge, a British reality show inspired by the original series. Fans hope this means even more content is on the horizon, whether through spinoffs, new seasons, or international adaptations.
