Talk around Jim Carrey’s appearance at the recent César Awards in Paris took an unexpected turn after online rumors questioned whether the actor was truly present.

The speculation began after drag performer Alexis Stone shared an Instagram post hinting that he had stepped into the spotlight posing as Carrey. He showed images of prosthetics and styling that closely matched the actor’s look from the ceremony. The post quickly fueled online chatter and conspiracy-style discussions. However, organizers moved fast to shut down the claims.

According to reporting shared with Variety, César Awards general delegate Gregory Caulier made it clear that Carrey’s attendance was real and carefully planned. He described the moment as authentic and meaningful, especially as the actor accepted an honorary award during the February 26 event.

Caulier explained that preparations for Carrey’s visit had been underway for months.

“Jim Carrey’s visit has been planned since this summer. From the outset, he was extremely touched by the Academy’s invitation. Eight months of ongoing, constructive discussions. He worked on his speech in French for months, asking me about the exact pronunciation of certain words,” he said.

Carrey’s effort to speak French was one of the night’s highlights. The actor reportedly practiced for months and delivered an emotional address that resonated with the audience. He attended with close family members, including his partner, daughter, and grandson, as well as longtime collaborators and friends.

Among those present was filmmaker Michel Gondry, who has worked with Carrey in the past. Their reunion at the ceremony added to what organizers described as a heartfelt evening. Caulier dismissed the online speculation entirely. “For me, it’s a non-issue. I just remember his generosity, his kindness, his benevolence, his elegance.”

During his speech, Carrey reflected on his family roots, sharing that his ancestor Marc-François Carré was born in Saint-Malo before moving to Canada centuries ago. He also spoke warmly about his father, Percy Joseph Carrey, crediting him for shaping his sense of humor and values.

The ceremony itself leaned into celebration rather than controversy. Host Benjamin Lavernhe even paid tribute to Carrey’s legacy with a playful musical segment inspired by The Mask.

Carrey’s body of work, including titles like The Truman Show, continues to hold a strong place in pop culture. That lasting influence may explain why a playful online post could spark such widespread debate.

Tis situation shows how quickly social media can turn humor or art into serious speculation. It also highlights just how iconic Jim Carrey remains, decades into his career. What do you think about the rumors and the response from the César Awards? Share your thoughts in the comments.
