Anime continues to make big moves at the box office as Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc slashed its way to the top spot this weekend.

According to reports, the film pulled in $17.2 million from 3,003 theaters across North America. This marks another strong win for the anime distributor, coming right after the success of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle, which surprised everyone with its massive $70 million debut last month.

Even though Chainsaw Man didn’t reach the same level as Demon Slayer, it still performed better than expected.

The movie managed to beat out several major releases, including Disney and 20th Century’s Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, Paramount’s romantic drama Regretting You, and last weekend’s box office leader Black Phone 2 from Universal and Blumhouse.

Based on Tatsuki Fujimoto’s hit manga, the movie continues the story from the first season of the anime. It was produced by MAPPA and directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara, with a screenplay by Hiroshi Seko. The film covers the manga’s fifth and sixth volumes, focusing on the relationship between Denji and Reze, a mix of action, chaos, and heartbreak that fans of the series have been waiting for.

Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc first hit Japanese theaters on September 19, under Toho, before rolling out globally through Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Releasing. It premiered in select Asian markets in late September and later reached theaters worldwide by October 24. So far, the movie has earned about $77 million globally, showing strong interest from anime fans around the world.

The film has been well-received by critics and viewers alike. On Rotten Tomatoes, 96% of critics gave it positive reviews, while Metacritic scored it 72 out of 100, meaning it got generally favorable reviews. Critics praised its animation, thrilling fight scenes, and emotional storytelling.

Richard Eisenbeis from Anime News Network gave the movie an A grade, saying its visuals, soundtrack, and heartfelt story made it “worth-watched.” Meanwhile, Wilson Chapman of IndieWire rated it a B+, calling it “one of the best films in the recent crop of anime TV expansions,” adding that its love story is “potent enough to make you cry.”

With another strong debut, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc shows that anime films aren’t just niche hits anymore, they’re now competing head-to-head with major Hollywood releases. Crunchyroll’s back-to-back box office wins prove that global audiences are hungry for more anime on the big screen.
