Channing Tatum is set to return as Gambit in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, and he’s already teased a major moment for his character. Speaking to Variety, Tatum revealed that Gambit will be part of a “big fight” with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.

Tatum first played Gambit in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, and the character quickly became a fan favorite.

Now, he’s reprising the role alongside other X-Men legends including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden.

The actor has long had a connection to Gambit. He was originally set to star in a solo Gambit movie and even worked on co-directing it with his producing partner Reid Carolin, but the project fell apart in 2019 after Disney acquired Fox. Tatum reflected on the missed opportunity, saying, “The universe just saved us. We would have failed so hard.”

He also discussed what makes Gambit unique, adding, “He likes women, he smokes, he drinks. He’s not just a save-the-world kind of guy — we need those, but we need contrast.” Tatum described how Marvel executives took time to get used to the character’s accent, and he decided “I’m not gonna go full Cajun.”

He said the Russo brothers want Gambit to be funny at times but still keep the drama, noting, “When Gambit gets serious — when he drops the Mardi Gras mask — things do matter.”

Filming has included long days in London, which Tatum described as challenging but rewarding. He also shared how he balanced the role with family, saying he considered whether to join Avengers: Doomsday because of his daughter, “I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do ‘Avengers,’ because I was going to have to be gone, but I was like — it’s OK. She’s going into middle school now.”

This isn’t the first fight spoiler revealed for the film. A few weeks ago, Alan Cumming mentioned he would face off against Pedro Pascal’s Mr. Fantastic.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for release in the United States on December 18, 2026. The film was originally set to come out in May 2025 but has been delayed multiple times due to production needs and the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike. It will be part of Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
