When news broke that ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ would end with its upcoming third season, fans were stunned. The show had only just reunited the Netflix-era cast and was building toward a Defenders team-up, so the idea of a final chapter felt abrupt. Now, star Charlie Cox is explaining why the end of ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ wasn’t a surprise to him.

His comments came at New York Comic Con, where the cast had just rolled out the first season 3 trailer on the Empire Stage. The timing gave fans a rare chance to hear how the team feels about the show’s conclusion.

Cox told Brandon Davis that he was aware the series would end with season 3 when filming began. He called it “a much better way to do it” given what happened last time, adding that the team has been able to plan for the ending, pay homage to it and make sure they do it right. He was speaking alongside Krysten Ritter and Finn Jones in a conversation that also touched on the Defenders reuniting.

The reference to last time is clear. The original Netflix series was cancelled after 3 seasons in 2018, a decision Cox has described in the past as feeling like a break-up. This time, he suggests, the ending is a deliberate choice rather than a sudden blow.

Marvel’s own comments line up with that account. Marvel TV head Brad Winderbaum has said that the original Netflix series ran for 3 seasons and that ‘Born Again’ is also planned for 3 seasons, describing it as always the intention. He added that after season 3 wraps, the studio will take a breath and figure out what’s next for the character.

That wording leaves room for Daredevil to return in another form. It’s a notable detail given how often Marvel has brought Matt Murdock into other projects, from ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ to ‘She-Hulk’.

The path to this point has been bumpy. ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ premiered in 2025 as a revival of the Netflix series, bringing back Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson and Wilson Bethel as Bullseye. It was originally conceived as a larger 18-episode season before being retooled, and the first season was split in 2.

Season 2 followed, with Krysten Ritter returning as Jessica Jones, and concluded in May. It was a major step toward bringing the wider Defenders back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Foggy’s shocking death in the first season’s premiere remains one of the show’s biggest moments.

The announcement also came with some creative shifts. The Hollywood Reporter reported that showrunner Dario Scardapane parted ways with Marvel after his contract expired during the post-production of season 3. The final season had already finished production by the time the news arrived, with a premiere on Disney+ expected in 2027.

Cox has also teased a new look for the final run. He told TheWrap that Matt will have a beard in season 3, calling it a fun and different look. He also noted earlier this year that he had been told about major story decisions before they began shooting season 2, which fits with the idea that the team has been planning ahead.

One of the most exciting elements of the final season is the reunion. The first trailer shows the Defenders assembling again, with Jessica Jones, Daredevil and others sharing the screen, and Finn Jones’ presence at the interview suggests Iron Fist will play a role. For many fans, seeing the street-level heroes team up again is the payoff they have waited years for.

It also gives the show a clear purpose. Instead of stretching the story over many more seasons, the creators can aim for a satisfying conclusion that honors the Netflix era and the new Disney+ chapter.

‘Daredevil: Born Again’ is the only live-action Marvel series on Disney+ to get a third season, and it has become the anchor of the studio’s television efforts. That makes its ending a notable moment for Marvel’s streaming strategy. It also raises the question of where Cox’s Daredevil will go next, especially since he has said he is not in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.

For now, fans can look forward to a final run that was planned from the start. Cox’s comments suggest the team is determined to make it count.
