Charlie Kirk’s 2024 Comments on Nicki Minaj Spark Controversy After Her Recent TPUSA Appearance: “I Don’t Think That’s a Good Role Model”
Nicki Minaj made headlines this week after appearing at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest on Sunday. The Queens-born rapper sat down with Erika Kirk, widow of right-wing commentator Charlie Kirk, for an interview in which she praised President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance.
Minaj called them “role models” and praised the administration for having “heart and soul.” She added, “Dear young men, you have amazing role models like our handsome, dashing president and you have amazing role models like the assassin JD Vance, our vice president… Both of them have a very uncanny ability to be someone that you relate to.” During the event, she also criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom, giving him the nickname “New-scum.”
While Minaj expressed strong support for the Trump administration, a resurfaced video from April 2024 shows Charlie Kirk expressing a very different opinion about her.
In the clip, which has been circulating on social media since Minaj’s AmericaFest appearance, Kirk appeared critical of Minaj and her music. He said she was not a good role model for young Black women. “Black culture is being held captive by influences, songs and role models. Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, I don’t think that’s a good role model for 18-year-old Black girls,” Kirk said. He went on to criticize songs that he said “glorify wet female g*******.”
It is unclear if Kirk’s opinions changed before his death. Charlie Kirk was shot and killed on September 10, at a campus debate event in Utah. Governor Spencer Cox called the shooting a “political assassination.” Supporters of Kirk have also shared a 2021 tweet in which he criticized how the Democratic Party treated Minaj. In that tweet, he wrote, “Democrats’ treatment of Nicki Minaj should be all the proof you need that they don’t care about Black people, especially those they can’t control. They just use them every 4 years for their votes. But people are waking up.”
Minaj has remained active in politics and social issues. In November, she attended a United Nations event to raise awareness about the alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria. Her appearance at AmericaFest, combined with her outspoken political views, has sparked discussion about her influence and how public figures are judged as role models.
