Charlie Sheen recently shared a surprising story about a $1 million check he gave to his ex-wife, Denise Richards, during a recent episode of Kevin Clancy’s KFC Radio podcast. The Two and a Half Men star explained that what started as a joke ended up being very real.

“I wrote a check to Denise once for $1 million on her birthday, kind of as a joke, and she kept it not as a joke,” Sheen recalled. “And then, like, a month later, [she] f**** cashed it.”

He couldn’t remember if he and Richards were still married when he wrote the check, but he admitted he understood why she cashed it. “Yeah, which makes it sting more?” he said. “But you know, if I’m on the other side of that, I’m probably cashing that check.”

Sheen joked that he wished Richards had given him a heads-up. “‘Hey, you sound like you’re driving somewhere,’” he imagined saying, “‘Yeah, to the bank, actually!’”

Despite the awkwardness, Sheen saw a silver lining. “But I guess there’s gratitude that there was enough money in that account for that check not to bounce,” he said. “You’re doing pretty good if you can accidentally give people a million bucks.”

Sheen and Richards were married from 2002 to 2006 and share two daughters, Sami, 21, and Lola, 20. Richards recently shared an image of the check on Instagram, joking that she had never cashed it. “Found this during my recent move. I never cashed it, @charliesheen. Is it still good?” she wrote, according to Us Weekly. The check was dated December 11, 2011, five years after their divorce.

Their marriage had been troubled, and Richards had previously obtained a temporary restraining order against Sheen. Despite that, the story of the $1 million check shows that even old conflicts can have unexpected, sometimes humorous, twists.

It’s wild to think a birthday joke could turn into such a big payday. What do you think about Sheen’s story? Would you ever cash a million-dollar prank check? Share your thoughts in the comments.
