Chris Evans has spent years keeping most of his tattoos private, making the rare glimpses that do surface online genuinely notable for fans who’ve followed his career closely. That’s exactly what happened this week when a new post from his longtime tattoo artist gave the public an unusually clear look at ink most people rarely see.

The tattoo in question traces back to 2018, when Evans and four of his fellow original Avengers, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, and Jeremy Renner, got matching tattoos following the release of ‘Avengers: Infinity War.’ Mark Ruffalo, the sixth member of that original core team, opted out of the group tribute at the time.

Now, ahead of Evans’ return to the MCU, East Side Ink tattoo artist Josh Lord shared a new video compilation of photos and clips capturing Evans over the years, including footage of the actor lifting his shirt to reveal the Avengers tattoo on his upper ribcage. Lord captioned the post as a tip of the hat to one of his favorite people before ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arrives, adding that Evans has been there for him during hard times and that he’s always honored to serve as both his friend and tattooer.

Lord also noted in his caption that he’s keeping Evans’ other tattoos private by request, clarifying that this particular blurry glimpse was released specifically because Evans himself chose to make it public.

The timing of the tattoo reveal lines up with growing anticipation for Evans’ comeback as Steve Rogers in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ set for release on December 18. The role marks his first time reprising Captain America in a starring capacity since 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ following a brief cameo as Johnny Storm in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ that had nothing to do with his original Marvel character.

Evans has previously described the moment his decision to return finally clicked into place. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly at San Diego Comic-Con last month, he recalled getting a call from his team about rumors that Robert Downey Jr. was in talks with Marvel, admitting his first reaction was uncertainty about what that could mean for him. He explained that once ‘Doomsday‘ co-director Joe Russo pitched him on the project and he learned Downey was already involved, everything suddenly felt right.

That reunion carries extra weight given Downey’s own high-profile return to the franchise, this time stepping into the villainous role of Doctor Doom rather than reprising Tony Stark. Having both actors back under the direction of the Russo brothers, who previously helmed Evans and Downey together across ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ has fueled significant excitement heading into the film’s release.

For longtime fans who’ve followed the original Avengers cast’s off-screen friendship as closely as their on-screen chemistry, moments like this tattoo reveal offer a small but meaningful reminder of the bond that helped define the franchise’s earliest, most beloved era. With Evans’ full transformation and role details still being revealed gradually ahead of the film’s premiere, glimpses like this one continue fueling anticipation for what’s shaping up to be one of the most emotionally loaded reunions in recent Marvel history.

As the countdown to December continues, expect more small, personal details like this to surface as Evans and his fellow original Avengers gear up for what could be one of the franchise’s biggest send-offs yet.
