Chris Evans Reveals Just How Brutal Steve Rogers’ Arc Will Be in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Chris Evans spent years turning down chances to bring Steve Rogers back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, describing at least a dozen pitches that came his way after ‘Avengers: Endgame’ closed out the character’s story in 2019. That reluctance made his eventual return for ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ feel especially significant once Marvel finally found a pitch he considered worth the trip back.

Evans has since spoken publicly about what convinced him to step back into the role, crediting a combination of Robert Downey Jr.’s own MCU return as Doctor Doom and a pitch from co-director Joe Russo with finally making the project click. He’s been clear that the decision wasn’t casual, insisting any return needed to serve the character rather than exist purely for nostalgia’s sake.

Now, Evans has offered his most detailed look yet at what that return actually entails, and it sounds far from a victory lap for Steve Rogers. Describing the character’s journey in the film, Evans said Steve goes through something genuinely brutal, undergoing a real examination into his nature and his values as the story pushes him to his limits.

That intensity, according to Evans, isn’t exactly a surprise given the directors’ history with the character. He pointed out that the Russo brothers have always loved beating up Steve Rogers, joking that it’s practically their favorite thing to do to him across the films they’ve worked on together, a trend that appears set to continue in dramatic fashion in this next installment.

Evans has elaborated elsewhere on just how severe that treatment gets in the new film, describing Steve as getting beaten up pretty badly throughout the story. He’s framed the character’s suffering as intentional rather than incidental, explaining that the ordeal is designed to put Steve’s principles to the test in ways audiences haven’t quite seen before.

That framing lines up with how Evans has described the overall filming experience, comparing the atmosphere on set to making the very first ‘Avengers’ back in 2011. He recalled feeling a similar sense of starstruck excitement watching Downey Jr. step back into a role that helped define the franchise, saying it reminded him of being the new kid on the block all over again, awestruck just to be sharing scenes with him.

Evans’ comeback marks his first appearance as Steve Rogers since ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ following a brief 2024 return as Johnny Storm in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ that had nothing to do with Captain America. Reports of his ‘Doomsday’ involvement first surfaced back in December 2024, though Evans spent months publicly denying any participation before officially confirming it.

Evans has also confirmed his involvement won’t stop with ‘Doomsday,’ revealing he’s set to appear in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ as well, with that film’s production beginning shortly after. Given how thoroughly Marvel has kept plot details under wraps, exactly how Steve’s arc unfolds across both films remains one of the more closely guarded mysteries heading into the franchise’s next major chapter.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to hit theaters this December, fans will finally get to see just how far the Russo brothers push Steve Rogers this time around.
