Chris Hemsworth has spent years bouncing between global film sets, bringing his black-ops mercenary Tyler Rake to life across continents for Netflix’s hit ‘Extraction‘ franchise. But for the third installment in the saga, the actor is getting something that’s eluded the series since its earliest days: the chance to film in his own backyard.

New set photos, obtained by BACKGRID, show Hemsworth spotted filming ‘Extraction 3’ in Sydney, Australia, alongside co-stars appearing on set for what looks like an intense shoot. The images capture the actor in character, surrounded by crew and equipment, as production continues to take shape across the region.

That Sydney shoot has been a long time coming for both Hemsworth and director Sam Hargrave, who has helmed all three films in the franchise. Production on ‘Extraction 3’ is currently underway across the New South Wales South Coast and Sydney, with Hemsworth reprising his role as Tyler Rake alongside returning co-stars Idris Elba and Golshifteh Farahani.

The Australian setting marks a genuine homecoming moment for the shoot, given the franchise’s complicated production history. ‘Extraction 2’ was originally slated to begin filming in Sydney back in September 2021, but COVID-19 restrictions forced Netflix to relocate the production overseas, with principal photography ultimately shifting to Prague before additional filming took place in Vienna. The very first ‘Extraction’ had its own globe-trotting production path, shooting in Ahmedabad and Mumbai, India, before wrapping in Ban Pong, Thailand.

Speaking about the milestone, Hargrave expressed genuine excitement about finally bringing the franchise to Australian soil. “We’re very much looking forward to filming the third chapter in our Extraction saga here in New South Wales,” Hargrave said, according to a press release covered by Variety Australia. “Our goal has always been to push the boundaries of action filmmaking, and with ‘Extraction 3,’ we’re taking our biggest swing yet.”

The production isn’t just a creative win for the franchise, either. Officials have projected the shoot will create roughly 450 local jobs and inject an estimated $127 million into New South Wales’ screen industry and broader economy, with the production receiving support through the Australian Government’s Location Offset and the Made in NSW Fund via Screen NSW. NSW Minister of the Arts John Graham welcomed the cast and crew publicly, saying, “We welcome this high calibre cast and crew filming ‘Extraction 3’ in Sydney and on the South Coast. To Chris Hemsworth, Idris Elba, Golshifteh Farahani and the rest of the team – we hope you enjoy your time in NSW. It is good to see Netflix continuing screen production here.”

As for the story itself, Netflix has kept plot specifics tightly under wraps. The film picks up after the events of 2023’s ‘Extraction 2,’ which saw Tyler Rake recruited by Elba’s mysterious handler character on behalf of Rake’s ex-wife, Mia, to rescue her sister Ketevan and her children from a brutal Georgian prison. Whatever direction the story takes next, Hargrave’s comments suggest fans should expect the franchise’s trademark bone-crunching stunt work and long-take action sequences to be pushed even further than before.

With filming expected to continue across Sydney and the South Coast through September, more set photos and behind-the-scenes glimpses are likely to keep trickling out in the weeks ahead.
