Chris Hemsworth Signs Off From Thailand as Tyler Rake’s Third Mission Nears the Finish Line

Few Netflix franchises have built their reputation on pure physical spectacle quite like ‘Extraction‘. The first film arrived in April 2020, and the sequel followed in June 2023, each one built around punishing fight choreography and long-take action sequences. Chris Hemsworth’s black-ops mercenary Tyler Rake has become one of the streamer’s most reliable action heroes.

The road to a third chapter has been unusually long. Hemsworth and director Sam Hargrave announced it on stage at Netflix’s Tudum event in 2023, but production was delayed largely because of the actor’s busy schedule with ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Kockroach’. Deadline then reported in April that Hemsworth had closed a deal to return, with Idris Elba and Golshifteh Farahani also back on board.

Cameras finally started rolling in July, and the shoot has now reached a notable milestone. Hemsworth is finishing up his time in Thailand on ‘Extraction 3’, and he marked it by sharing photos from a few weeks of intense filming that also left room for some fun non-work adventures on the weekends. One image shows him standing in shallow water with his arms raised in front of towering limestone rock formations, while another shows a colorful temple terrace overlooking the landscape.

Thailand carries special meaning for the series. The first film was shot in Ratchaburi, including its climactic bridge battle, while ‘Extraction 2’ swapped that setting for the colder backdrop of the Czech Republic and Austria. Returning to Thailand brings the franchise full circle.

Production began in New South Wales before moving to Thailand. Hemsworth was spotted in Bangkok earlier this month practicing Muay Thai at a local gym, working pads with his friend and trainer Jack Boonsanong. Those training videos tied directly into the shoot and also echoed his recent comments about wanting to test himself in a professional MMA fight.

Hargrave is back in the director’s chair, with David Weil writing the screenplay after an earlier draft by Pat Cunnane. AGBO, the company led by Anthony and Joe Russo, produces alongside Hemsworth’s Wild State banner. Idris Elba and Golshifteh Farahani are returning as well.

Plot details remain classified. Based on where ‘Extraction 2’ ended, with Tyler and Nik in prison and Elba’s character setting a new mission in motion, the sequel looks set to continue from there. Netflix has not confirmed any of that, though.

Netflix has not announced a release date, and the film is not currently listed on its 2026 streaming schedule. With filming expected to end around early October according to earlier reports, ‘Extraction 3’ is not expected to arrive before 2027. Netflix has also not announced an official wrap for the shoot.

The franchise is growing beyond the movies, too. A spinoff series called ‘Mercenary: An Extraction Series’ is listed as being in post-production, with 8 episodes planned. That suggests Netflix sees the world of Tyler Rake as more than a trilogy.

Hemsworth’s schedule is packed. In addition to Rake, he returns as Thor in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which arrives on December 18, and Marvel’s typical reshoot model could keep him busy again. Wrapping the Thailand leg frees him to focus on the film’s promotion.

For fans, the update is a reminder that the long wait is nearly over, even if the premiere is still months away. Between the Muay Thai footage and the scenic travel photos, the shoot appears to have been as physically demanding as it was memorable. And the franchise’s signature in-camera action should once again be the main draw.
