Christian Bale recently shared his admiration for the 2004 animated film Howl’s Moving Castle and revealed it is a movie he wants to share with his children. Speaking on his Instagram channel, Bale described the Hayao Miyazaki-directed classic as a “masterpiece” and expressed his enthusiasm for the film’s story and themes.

Bale also lent his voice to the English version of the movie, playing the charming wizard Howl.

Howl’s Moving Castle, based on Diana Wynne Jones’ 1986 novel, is a Japanese animated fantasy film produced by Studio Ghibli and directed by Miyazaki.

The story takes place in a fictional kingdom where magic exists alongside early 20th-century technology. It follows Sophie, a young milliner who is cursed by a witch and transformed into an elderly woman. Sophie’s journey leads her to Howl, a powerful wizard who refuses to fight for the king, and together they navigate love, loyalty, and the impact of war.

The film reflects Miyazaki’s anti-war views, inspired by his anger over the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq. He intentionally crafted a story that highlights the destructiveness of war, while also exploring themes like aging, compassion, and empowerment.

Bale’s praise aligns with the movie’s enduring appeal, which goes beyond its fantastical visuals.

Howl’s Moving Castle premiered at the 61st Venice International Film Festival in September 2004 and was released in Japan in November the same year.

It became one of the most successful Japanese films ever, earning $190 million domestically and $46 million internationally. Critics lauded the animation and the depth of its storytelling. The film earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature and won several other accolades, including Tokyo Anime Awards and a Nebula Award for Best Script.
