Christopher Nolan Names the Movie Moment That Means the Most to Him
Christopher Nolan has made some of the most talked-about movies in recent years, like Inception, Interstellar, and Oppenheimer. But when asked which scene he’s most proud of, he didn’t pick something from those films. Instead, he picked a moment from The Dark Knight Rises, the last movie in his Batman trilogy.
Speaking at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, Nolan shared that the opening scene of The Dark Knight Rises is still the moment that stands out the most in his career. It’s the part where the villain Bane hijacks a plane mid-air. Christian Bale’s Batman doesn’t even appear in that scene, but Nolan said it means a lot to him because of how it was made.
The hijacking scene is intense. It shows Bane and his team taking control of a CIA plane while in flight, and the action happens thousands of feet in the air. But what makes it so special to Nolan is that they didn’t rely on computer effects. Instead, the team pulled it off with real stunts and months of preparation.
Nolan explained at the event, “It was sort of an incredible coming together of lots and lots of planning by a lot of members of the team who worked for months rehearsing all these parachute jumps.” He went on to say, “I was amazed at what the team achieved using various old-fashioned methods. I was very proud of how that came together.” These quotes were reported by Business Insider.
What’s even more impressive is that the whole sequence, which was planned as a five-day shoot, was actually finished in just two days. Nolan and his team even dropped a real plane out of the sky to make the scene look as real as possible. It was a bold move, and one that shows just how much Nolan cares about using practical effects when he can.
The introduction of Bane in that scene set the tone for the rest of the movie. Tom Hardy’s performance, combined with the bold action, made for one of the most memorable openings in a superhero movie.
Nolan is known for mixing deep stories with huge visuals, but he also has a reputation for doing things the hard way—using real sets, real stunts, and real effects whenever possible. That approach is what makes this particular scene in The Dark Knight Rises his favorite.
For him, it’s not just about telling a great story. It’s also about how that story is brought to life on screen.
