‘Christy’ Starring Sydney Sweeney Posts One of the Worst Wide-Release Openings Ever
“Christy,” the new sports drama starring Sydney Sweeney, opened to a surprisingly weak response at the box office.
The film, which tells the story of Christy Martin, one of the most famous female boxers in the United States during the 1990s, also touches on the 2010 attempted murder by her husband, who was also her coach. Alongside Sweeney, the movie features Ben Foster, Merritt Weaver, Katy O’Brian, Ethan Embry, and Chad L. Coleman.
Directed by David Michôd and co-written with Mirrah Foulkes, “Christy” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 5, in the Special Presentations section. The film later hit theaters across the country on November 7, with a release on over 2,000 screens.
Despite the wide release, the film’s opening day numbers were very low. Box Office Mojo reports that “Christy” made just $600,000 on Friday across 2,184 theaters. This put the movie at number ten in domestic rankings and suggested a likely opening weekend of around $3 million, far below expectations for a film of this scale.

Sydney Sweeney spoke earlier this year about preparing for the role. “I came onboard to play Christy, and I had about three and a half months of training,” she said, highlighting the effort she put into transforming for the part. Even with her dedication, the film struggled to attract a large audience in its first days.
The disappointing start makes “Christy” one of the worst wide-release openings in recent history for a movie released in more than 2,000 theaters. Analysts say the early performance may reflect weak interest despite the true-story appeal and high-profile cast.
