Marvel Television is in an odd place right now, trimming its Disney+ slate while quietly lining up whatever comes next. Sitting right in the middle of that shake-up is the ‘Zodiac’ spy thriller, a project that has gone from industry whisper to fan obsession in a matter of weeks.

The timing is hard to ignore. Marvel’s live-action TV output has been noticeably thinning out, with ‘VisionQuest’ set to premiere Oct. 14 as the only new Marvel series on the release calendar. Meanwhile, ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ is heading toward a final run in 2027.

Into that vacuum stepped Clark Gregg, who shared the ‘Zodiac‘ logo on his Instagram Story. The image is simple: a black background, the Marvel Television banner, and the show’s wordmark glowing beneath it. It was enough to send fans racing toward a familiar theory, that the new spy series connects to ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’

Gregg is best known as Agent Phil Coulson, a role that began in ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Iron Man 2’ before carrying through ‘Thor’ and ‘The Avengers’. He then anchored the ABC series and remains the only cast member to appear in every episode of ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ So when he posts spy-flavored Marvel branding, people notice.

The show has a history of fan loyalty, too. It debuted in 2013 as the first TV spinoff from Marvel’s big-screen universe, and Coulson’s on-screen death only made viewers louder. As Gregg told ABC7 around the time the series shot its 100th episode, “fans did a whole movement online, that he’s not dead.”

That long run is exactly why any hint of a spy-themed Marvel project gets treated as a possible homecoming. The series was eventually announced to end with a 7th and final season, and its official account noted it had become the longest-running Marvel TV series to date.

Officially, very little. Marvel Studios and Disney+ haven’t issued any public comment, and it remains unclear which character would lead the show. TheWrap learned that Marvel had greenlit the spy thriller, with a source noting the studio always has 3 to 5 live-action shows in development.

There are caveats. The greenlight arrived about 2 months after ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ wrapped filming on its third season, and it isn’t clear whether the word means a full series order or simply more active development. Development also never guarantees a show will reach screens.

Marvel’s Next Live-Action Disney+ Show Is a Spy Thriller Called ‘Zodiac’ — Here’s What We Know

The most obvious comic link is Jonathan Hickman’s ‘Secret Warriors’ and ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ stories, which mixed Zodiac iconography and Leonardo da Vinci into a spy saga about Nick Fury uniting superpowered allies against Hydra. Elements of that story were previously adapted in ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’, which is precisely why fans are connecting the dots. Another organization named Zodiac is also described in the comics as a longtime rival of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Other candidates exist. There’s the supervillain cabal of 12 villains themed around the astrological star signs, led by Scorpio, and a separate Zodiac created by Joe Casey and Nathan Fox that has recently factored into Jed McKay’s ongoing ‘Moon Knight’ run. That second possibility has fans wondering whether the show could set up a return for Oscar Isaac’s version of the hero.

Then there’s Zodiak with a K, a.k.a. Norman Harrison, a hitman who fits the spy thriller bill but is also tied to Marvel’s occult world, having clashed with heroes like Doctor Strange and Ghost Rider. It’s also possible the title is a red herring, with these villains facing a more prominent hero in a show nobody has identified yet.

The name even has a bit of Marvel screen history. ‘Marvel One-Shot: Agent Carter,’ released in 2013, follows Peggy Carter as she joins the nascent S.H.I.E.L.D. and hunts for a mysterious Zodiac key.

The surrounding news adds weight to the project. Brad Winderbaum, the head of Marvel Television, had reportedly pushed for ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ to become an annually recurring series, but a significant drop in viewership for Season 2 appears to have factored into the decision to wrap it up.

Disney+ also dropped its live-action ‘Gargoyles’ series, which makes ‘Zodiac’ look less like an expansion and more like Marvel developing fresh concepts while trimming existing shows. For a division delivering mostly bad news lately, a new spy thriller is a welcome change of pace.

Of course, a logo on an Instagram Story isn’t a confirmation, and nothing official links ‘Zodiac’ to Coulson’s old team. Still, with Gregg himself apparently in on the tease, hope is running high that Marvel is quietly reopening the ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ files.

Is ‘Zodiac’ secretly connected to ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’?
