Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald, the team behind the Netflix hit ‘Cobra Kai’ are in talks to bring Knight Rider, the iconic 1980s show about a talking car, to the big screen.

According to sources, Hurwitz, Schlossberg, and Heald are in early talks to write the movie’s screenplay. Hurwitz and Schlossberg are also in discussions to direct.

The trio will produce through their Counterbalance Entertainment company, joining Kelly McCormick and David Leitch of 87North, who are producing through their first-look deal with Universal. Gary Barber and Chris Stone are also producing through Spyglass.

Knight Rider originally aired on NBC from 1982 to 1986 and was created by TV producer Glen A. Larson. The show followed Michael Knight, played by David Hasselhoff, a detective who becomes an agent for FLAG, the Foundation for Law and Government.

His partner was KITT, a high-tech, indestructible, artificially intelligent Trans Am. Together, the duo fought criminals who acted above the law. The show was famous for its high-concept premise, a charismatic lead, and an unforgettable synth-heavy theme.

A feature film adaptation has been in development for some time, with a previous script by Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider. The new version, guided by the Cobra Kai creators, promises a fresh take. “Expect the unexpected when it comes to the Cobra Kai creators,” sources say.

After finishing Cobra Kai’s sixth and final season, Hurwitz, Schlossberg, and Heald began exploring new projects. One of these is a new Harold & Kumar installment for Lionsgate/Mandate Pictures.

With the Cobra Kai team on board, fans can expect a bold and creative take on the classic Knight Rider franchise, combining nostalgia with new ideas for a modern audience.
