‘Cocomelon: The Movie’ Teaser Trailer Is Finally Here, and JJ Is Headed to the Big Screen
DreamWorks Animation has spent the past year quietly building toward one of the more unexpected theatrical crossovers in recent memory, bringing one of YouTube’s biggest phenomena into full cinematic form. After months of casting reveals and first-look images trickling out to fans, the project has now delivered its first proper teaser trailer.
The ‘Cocomelon‘ brand has become a genuine juggernaut since launching as a YouTube channel back in 2006, eventually drawing more than four billion average monthly views and expanding into consumer products, streaming music, and live entertainment under Moonbug Entertainment’s ownership since 2020. Turning that kind of digital-native success into a theatrical feature marks a significant leap for a franchise built almost entirely around short-form YouTube content rather than traditional storytelling.
The teaser trailer for ‘Cocomelon: The Movie’ has been released, confirming the CG-animated musical adventure is coming soon to theaters as DreamWorks Animation, Universal Pictures, and Moonbug Entertainment continue building anticipation ahead of its release. The film follows JJ and his friends as they set off on a brand-new, music-filled adventure, expanding the beloved preschool universe into a full theatrical format for the very first time.
Behind the camera, Kathleen Thorson Good directs the feature in her feature directorial debut, having previously worked as a story artist on ‘Kung Fu Panda’. The film brings together a surprisingly starry voice cast for a preschool property, including SZA, Ike Barinholtz, Nicholas Hoult, Sarah Sherman, Ego Nwodim, Josh Johnson, Matt Friend, Rhys Darby, and Cristo Fernández, each voicing entirely new characters created specifically for the movie.
Alongside that adult ensemble, a group of young actors takes on the franchise’s iconic characters, with Connor Esterson voicing JJ, Camden Brooks as Cody, Olivia London Leyva as Nina, and Aerina DeBoer as CeCe. Grammy-nominated songwriter and producer Justin Tranter, known for collaborations with artists including Chappell Roan, Justin Bieber, and Selena Gomez, serves as the film’s executive music producer, a fitting hire given how central music has always been to the CoComelon brand’s educational approach.
‘Cocomelon: The Movie’ is produced through a partnership between DreamWorks Animation, Moonbug Entertainment, Flywheel Media, and Prime Focus Studios, with animation handled by the DNEG Group. It marks DNEG’s third collaboration with DreamWorks following their work on ‘Trolls Band Together’ and its accompanying short, and it stands as only the second DreamWorks film built specifically for the preschool demographic, following ‘Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie’.
The producing team behind the film has plenty else on its plate as well, with Flywheel Media currently in production on ‘The Angry Birds Movie 3’ for Paramount, while Prime Focus Studios recently co-produced ‘The Garfield Movie’ and continues work on the live-action/animation hybrid ‘Animal Friends’ alongside Legendary Entertainment and Ryan Reynolds’ Maximum Effort banner.
The film is currently set for a theatrical release on February 19, 2027, having been moved up roughly a week from its originally announced February 26 date earlier this year to avoid a scheduling conflict with another major animated release. That timing would make it the second DreamWorks Animation film to open in February, following ‘How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World’.
With a starry voice cast now locked in and this first teaser giving audiences their earliest glimpse of JJ’s big-screen adventure, ‘Cocomelon: The Movie’ looks set to test whether one of children’s entertainment’s biggest streaming and YouTube phenomena can translate into a genuine theatrical experience.
