Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson Star in Taylor Swift’s ‘Patient Zero’ Video, and the Teaser Is Already Cryptic

Taylor Swift has never announced anything quietly. Over the past few days she has rolled out one of her most puzzle-heavy campaigns in years, from swapped letters in her Instagram bio to zeros replacing the Os in lyrics on Apple Music. The payoff for the ‘Patient Zero’ rollout has now arrived in the form of a cinematic music video with a surprising cast.

The single is due Friday, September 25, and it is Swift’s second bit of new music this year after ‘I Knew It, I Knew You’, which she released in June for the ‘Toy Story 5’ soundtrack. It is also tied to an expanded edition of last year’s ‘The Life of a Showgirl’, which spent 12 weeks atop the Billboard 200 and produced two Hot 100 No. 1 singles. The new version is called ‘The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore’ and adds four new songs: ‘Patient Zero’, ‘Cleveland!’, ‘Pink Clouding’ and ‘Babylon’.

Now the video has a headline-grabbing lineup. Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson will star alongside Swift in the clip, which Swift directed herself. It will world premiere at the MTV VMAs on Sunday, September 27, and Swift previewed it in a teaser on ‘CBS Mornings’ on Thursday.

The preview is short, moody and wordless. It cuts between Swift and Johnson mirroring each other across a bathroom sink, diving into water and standing together at a grave. A snow-covered graveyard, a black rose placed on a headstone and a Greek statue also appear.

There is a close-up of Swift crying that shows her engagement ring, and then Farrell steps out of a luxury sedan at night. The final images bring all three together, dressed in black, in a lounge. The credits list Swift as the star, along with Farrell and Johnson.

The soundtrack is a lilting instrumental with Irish folk touches, so fans still have no idea what the song sounds like. That hasn’t stopped speculation from taking off.

Swift has also brought serious firepower behind the lens. The video was shot by Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, known for ‘The Revenant’ and ‘Birdman’, who also shot Tom Cruise’s new movie ‘Digger’. The look of the teaser, with its concrete interiors, wide windows and stark statuary, suggests a very different palette from the glitter of the ‘Showgirl’ era.

It is also Swift’s first post-wedding music video, following what the press has described as a headline-dominating wedding this year. The VMAs will honor her with the inaugural Artist-Director Award, and she is also nominated in multiple categories, including video of the year.

The title has inspired plenty of theorizing. One outlet noted that many fans think ‘Patient Zero’ alludes to a 2024 Los Angeles Times article describing Swift as “patient zero for emotional contagion”, though that is speculation, and a Showbiz411 writer floated a different possibility tied to the phrase’s historic use. Swift hasn’t confirmed what the song is about, or whether it starts a new era.

The rollout hasn’t been entirely smooth. The single’s cover art drew criticism from some social media users who called it excessively edited, and the plan to sell three CD versions with different covers for the standard, acoustic and piano takes also drew eye rolls. Even so, the excitement is huge, with the teaser passing 142,000 views within an hour of Film Updates sharing it.

For Farrell and Johnson, the casting adds a prestige-film sheen to a pop event. The VMAs will broadcast live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on CBS, MTV and Paramount+, and it’s shaping up to be one of Swift’s biggest nights in years.
