Few animated series have turned a strange premise into such a gripping slow burn as ‘Common Side Effects.’ With its mix of conspiracy-thriller tension, deadpan humor and mind-bending mushroom lore, the Adult Swim show has built a devoted following since its debut. Fans have been waiting nearly two years for more, and the wait is finally getting shorter.

The series was created by Joe Bennett (‘Scavengers Reign’) and Steve Hely (‘Veep’) and is executive produced by Mike Judge and Greg Daniels. It follows former high school lab partners Marshall and Frances, who discover a rare mushroom called the Blue Angel that can cure almost any ailment. The first season premiered in February 2025 and earned a Peabody Award, four Annie Awards and nominations from the Emmys and the Independent Spirit Awards.

Now, Adult Swim has released the first teaser for the second season, and it comes with a firm date. The show returns on Sunday night at 11 p.m. ET/PT on January 24, with episodes streaming the next day on HBO Max. The date was announced by Bennett and Hely at New York Comic Con.

The roughly 30-second teaser picks up with Marshall and Frances trying to go completely under the radar. Their plan is to study the mushroom’s side effects in secret and then share the research with 500 of the world’s top scientists at institutions like Cambridge, Johns Hopkins and the University of Connecticut. The goal is to get a cure to humanity before they are caught.

Of course, things don’t go smoothly. Federal agent Copano tracks Marshall down in an unlikely getaway vehicle, an ice cream truck. The second half of the teaser leans into the show’s trademark atmosphere and awkward humor.

The first season ended with the mushroom declared highly illegal and Marshall barely escaping a raid on a farm growing it. He headed to California, which, according to Hely, allows the second season to slow down and tell a story about people in hiding. Creators have described it as a slow-burn thriller set in a highly detailed Oregon town.

The new episodes will also dive deeper into the mushroom’s history, giving viewers a closer look at the lore. Meanwhile, DEA Agent Harrington’s partner, Copano, is recovering from injuries suffered in the raid. At San Diego Comic-Con, the show previewed a diner scene in which the two agents reunite a few months after the finale.

One of the series’ defining qualities is how grounded and cinematic it looks. Despite its fantastical elements, from tiny white creatures in hallucinations to characters with very big heads, the creators aim to make it feel like the real world. That approach has set it apart from traditional adult animation.

For the new season, Bennett has cited his love of the Coen Brothers and 1990s thrillers like ‘The Fugitive.’ Hely has pointed to influences including the ‘Indiana Jones’ films, ‘National Treasure,’ ‘The Social Network’ and ‘The Insider.’ That mix of adventure and procedural drama fits the show’s blend of paranoia and comedy.

Dave King returns as Marshall and Emily Pendergast as Frances. Martha Kelly voices Agent Harrington, Joseph Lee Anderson plays Agent Copano and Judge also lends his voice to the series. The core cast helped make the first season such a hit.

The creators have said they remain committed to telling surprising stories and to their long-term mission of healing humanity through mysterious mushrooms. That tongue-in-cheek tone is part of the show’s charm. It treats its absurd premise with just enough seriousness to keep the stakes real.

Adult Swim renewed the series in March 2025, and the production has given fans glimpses along the way. A work-in-progress session at the Annecy festival in June revealed that the new season would arrive in 2027, and an extended first look followed at San Diego Comic-Con. Now the date is locked in.

It will be the first new season in nearly two years, and the teaser suggests it will raise the stakes. With fugitives on the run, agents closing in and a world-changing discovery at risk, the series is poised to expand its cat-and-mouse game. For viewers who’ve been itching for another dose, the return is nearly here.
