The new DC Universe is slowly taking shape under James Gunn and Peter Safran, but one big question still hangs over fans: who will play Batman and Wonder Woman?

We already had our first look at David Corenswet as Superman in the recently released film that kicks off the live-action DCU, and fans are currently enjoying Peacemaker season 2. But the rest of DC’s famous trinity is still a mystery.

James Gunn has confirmed before that neither Batman nor Wonder Woman have been cast yet, which naturally leaves fans speculating. Over the past months, names like Alan Ritchson and Jensen Ackles have been popular fan choices to take on Batman.

Some people even hope Robert Pattinson’s version, which belongs to the separate Elseworlds branch of DC Studios, might one day cross into the main DCU.

Recently, though, Gunn was asked about another interesting name: Chris Pratt. The actor is best known for playing Star-Lord in Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy over at Marvel.

He’s a big star and has the action movie credentials, so it’s not surprising that fans wondered if he could be Batman in the new DCU.

Gunn answered the question very directly. “As Batman? No… As something? Yes.”

That response came as no shock to many fans. Gunn has said in the past that he enjoys working with actors he already knows, because he trusts their professionalism and likes their energy on set. So, while Chris Pratt won’t be putting on the cape and cowl, it sounds like Gunn is leaving the door wide open for him to show up in another role within the DCU.

As for Batman himself, his official live-action debut in the DCU is planned for The Brave and the Bold. Gunn announced that the movie will be inspired by Grant Morrison’s comic run and will introduce Damian Wayne, Bruce Wayne’s son, as Robin. Gunn described it as a father-and-son story, and it’s set to be very different from past Batman films.

We already got a small glimpse of Batman in Creature Commandos, but that version didn’t have an actor or voice attached to him. The Brave and the Bold will be his true introduction.

Andy Muschietti, who directed The Flash, has been attached to direct, with his sister Barbara producing alongside Gunn and Safran. However, development has been slow due to scheduling conflicts and the need to keep it separate from Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II. Gunn also revealed that writer is already attached to the project but he is keeping it a secret.

For now, the big reveal of who will play Batman in the DCU remains one of the biggest unanswered questions in superhero movies. And while Chris Pratt is officially off the table for that role, it sounds like James Gunn still has plans for him somewhere down the road.
