‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’ Cast Reacts to Cancellation, Hoping the BAU Finds a New Home
Few procedurals have been brought back from the dead as successfully as ‘Criminal Minds‘. The series followed the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit for 15 seasons on CBS before it was canceled in 2020, and fans never stopped asking for more. When it returned on Paramount+ in late 2022 as ‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’, it felt like a gift to the loyal audience that refused to let go.
Showrunner Erica Messer said at the time that the team never wanted to go away to begin with. She explained that there were plenty of stories left to tell and that the show had never hit a creative lull. That optimism carried the revival through several seasons, with the 19th premiering on May 28, 2026, and a renewal for a 20th arriving in May.
Now the story has taken another turn. The ‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’ cancellation was announced on Friday, with the long-running police procedural set to end after its forthcoming 20th season, the fifth since it adopted the ‘Evolution’ subtitle on Paramount+. The final episodes are scheduled to air in 2027, and members of the cast have been sharing their reactions on social media.
Kirsten Vangsness, who has played tech analyst Penelope Garcia since the first season, posted an Instagram video addressing the news directly. She confirmed that the show is being canceled and called the moment bittersweet, comparing it to the scene in ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ where Charlie is grateful for the chocolate despite what he is losing. She also noted how rare it is for a show to last this long.
Vangsness said she loves her job and that Messer believes there are many more stories to tell. If the cast could keep telling them somewhere else, she said, that would be amazing, and she added that the whole group feels the same way. She also suggested the show could still find a home elsewhere.
She revealed in the video’s comments that the cast learned the news at the same time as fans. Another report said she found out just 90 minutes before the announcement went public. That detail has stung followers, who imagined the cast had time to prepare.
Messer described the decision as sudden in a statement. She said she was filled with gratitude for the cast, writers, directors and crew, as well as the fans around the world whose loyalty has kept the show going for two decades. She also said she looks forward to sharing the final season and celebrating the legacy the team built together.
Other cast members used Instagram to share their feelings. RJ Hatanaka, who joined during season 16 as FBI agent Tyler Green, posted a cast photo and called the group the finest set of people. Aisha Tyler shared the same photo and described the cast as family for life, while A.J. Cook, who has played JJ since the original series premiere in 2005, said the cast would own her heart forever.

The cancellation is a surprise given the show’s performance. Coverage notes that ‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’ has been among the most-streamed shows of 2026. The series also continues to star Joe Mantegna as David Rossi, Adam Rodriguez as Luke Alvez and Paget Brewster as Emily Prentiss.
The show is produced by 20th Television and CBS Studios. In total, the franchise will have run for 20 seasons, made up of the original 15 on CBS and five as the Paramount+ continuation. For a procedural, that is a remarkable run by any standard.

Reaction among viewers has leaned toward hope rather than finality. Many fans have called for another network or streamer to pick up the series, pointing to other shows that were saved multiple times. Since the program has already been resurrected once, some are optimistic it could return again.
That optimism is not unreasonable, given that the cast has said it is open to continuing if a new platform emerges. For now, there is still a final season to look forward to, with time to savor the team’s last cases before the BAU signs off. Whether it ends for good or finds a third act remains to be seen.
