Criminal Minds: Evolution is back, and fans wasted no time sharing strong opinions online after learning that one controversial character is returning once again.

The new season of the Paramount+ crime drama premiered on May 28, and while viewers were excited to see familiar faces from the BAU team return, a lot of the conversation quickly shifted toward Elias Voit, played by Zach Gilford.

According to promotional material shared on Instagram ahead of the premiere, Voit will continue to play a major role in the latest season — and not everyone is happy about it.

Voit, also known as Sicarius, became one of the reboot’s biggest villains after creating a secret network of serial killers. Since his introduction, the character has stayed at the center of the show’s biggest storylines, and some longtime viewers now feel the series has focused on him for too long.

After Paramount+ released a teaser featuring scenes from previous seasons with Voit, fans filled the comments with mixed reactions. Some viewers said they were tired of seeing the same storyline continue year after year.

“We’re tired of Voit. We want his storyline to end, it’s getting stale guys. This better be the last season about him,” one fan wrote under the post.

Another viewer added, “Ugh we are still on this guy?! Literally skipped last season hoping his storyline would get wrapped up.”

Others defended the character and said Voit remains one of the most interesting villains the show has introduced in years.

“Hot take I DO love him. I just need our MAIN characters to have bigger storylines again too,” one fan commented.

Another person wrote, “I mean…Voit has been one heck of an antagonist, you can’t deny it.”

The debate highlights a bigger issue some fans have with Criminal Minds: Evolution. While many people enjoy the darker and more serialized storytelling style of the reboot, others miss the older format where each episode focused on a different case instead of one long-running villain arc.

Still, the writers seem far from finished with Voit’s story. The season 3 finale already hinted that the character was heading into a more emotional and unstable phase. Instead of simply being portrayed as a cold killer, the show started exploring his mental state and the damage caused by his past actions.

Zach Gilford also spoke about the character’s future in an interview with Good Housekeeping back in 2025. According to the actor, Voit may continue struggling with the darker side of himself.

“Voit knows he can’t bring anyone back or change what he’s done,” Gilford explained. “Even if he thought he would never kill or hurt someone again, there’s parts of him that are still there.”

He continued by saying, “There’s always a chance he could re-associate back into that character again.”

For now, it seems Criminal Minds: Evolution plans to keep Voit at the center of the story, whether fans like it or not. The return of the character has clearly divided viewers online, but it has also created even more buzz around the new season.

One thing is certain: fans will be watching closely to see if Elias Voit’s story finally reaches its end, or if the series has even more surprises planned for him.
