Crunchyroll has shared an update that is sure to frustrate some fans of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.

The latest film in the franchise, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, is enjoying huge success in theaters, but streaming won’t be an option for some time.

Infinity Castle is an animated dark fantasy film that adapts the “Infinity Castle” arc of the original manga series by Koyoharu Gotouge.

It follows the fourth season of the anime and builds on previous films, including Mugen Train (2020), To the Swordsmith Village (2023), and To the Hashira Training (2024). Directed by Haruo Sotozaki and produced by Ufotable, the movie marks the first part of a trilogy announced after the fourth season ended.

The film officially titled Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle – Part 1: Akaza Returns, debuted in Japan on July 18, via Aniplex and Toho. Crunchyroll handled releases in select Asian countries in August and then rolled it out to other regions in September. Infinity Castle has been a massive hit, breaking box office records and earning $616 million worldwide.

This makes it the highest-grossing Japanese film of 2025 so far and the seventh-highest-grossing film globally this year. Critics have largely praised the movie for its action, visuals, and story, though some noted issues with pacing.

Despite its success, Crunchyroll has confirmed that the film will not be available for streaming in 2025. Mitchel Berger, Executive Vice President of Global Commerce at Crunchyroll, explained the reasoning in an interview with Popverse:

“Go see [Demon Slayer Infinity Castle] in the theater because the theater is the only place you’re going to be able to see this film in 2025. If you want to see it, go see it in the theater because that’s the only place it’s going to be available.” The decision is designed to keep the film’s momentum strong at the box office before moving to streaming in 2026.

From a fan perspective, this news is a mix of excitement and frustration. The film is clearly a must-see experience on the big screen, but many viewers who prefer watching at home will have to wait months. Crunchyroll is betting that theater attendance will remain high, while also delaying the streaming release to maximize the film’s commercial impact.
