‘Crystal Lake’ Reveals New Look Ahead of Its Debut, Teasing Pamela Voorhees’ Origin Story

Horror fans have waited nearly four years for a proper look at how Jason Voorhees’ story truly began, and that wait is finally entering its final stretch. ‘Crystal Lake,’ the long-gestating ‘Friday the 13th’ prequel series, was first ordered back in October 2022, only to endure years of behind-the-scenes turbulence before finally taking shape under its current creative team.

That turbulence included original showrunner Bryan Fuller departing the project in 2024, with ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ creator Brad Caleb Kane eventually stepping in as the series’ new creator, writer, showrunner, and executive producer. Backed by A24 and produced for Peacock, the eight-episode drama has spent the past several months slowly revealing details about its cast and premise ahead of release.

Now Peacock has unveiled the first official posters for ‘Crystal Lake,’ confirming the series will premiere all eight episodes on October 15, positioning the launch squarely within the heart of Halloween season. The artwork leans heavily into the franchise’s iconic imagery, teasing both Jason’s connection to the story and the return of Pamela Voorhees as its central figure.

Linda Cardellini stars as Pamela, the character originally portrayed by Betsy Palmer in the 1980 original film and the franchise’s very first killer. According to the show’s official premise, the series is set before the events of the original film, centering on Pamela as she struggles with grief over the loss of her young son, Jason, who drowned in Crystal Lake nearly a year earlier, with her life upended once two strangers arrive in town asking questions about her past.

Cardellini previously told Deadline that Pamela is a character who remains important to the franchise but largely unexplored, calling the opportunity to dig into her backstory really fun to take on. She’s also credited Kane with building what she described as a mixtape of ideas he wanted to explore for the character, saying the material goes all over the place emotionally while still staying entertaining.

Joining Cardellini in the main cast are William Catlett as Levon Brooks, Devin Kessler as Briana Brooks, Cameron Scoggins as Dorf, and Gwendolyn Sundstrom as Grace, with young Jason Voorhees played by Callum Vinson. The recurring cast further includes Nick Cordileone, Joy Suprano, Danielle Kotch, and Phoenix Parnevik, rounding out a mostly fresh ensemble built specifically for the show’s original storyline.

Behind the camera, directing duties are split across the season, with Michael Lennox helming the first three episodes, Celine Held and Logan George directing episodes four through six, and Quyen Tran closing out the season with the final two episodes. That structure suggests a deliberate shift in tone or pacing as Pamela’s story builds toward the events audiences already know from the original 1980 film.

The newly released artwork plays directly into that anticipation, with one poster teasing the tagline “Before Jason” and the other referencing Pamela’s presence with the phrase “There was Pamela,” reinforcing the show’s framing as a true origin story rather than a simple slasher reboot. For a franchise built almost entirely around Jason’s legacy, centering the story on his mother’s unraveling before his existence even begins marks a distinct tonal shift for the property.

With a premiere date now locked in and this fresh wave of promotional material building anticipation, ‘Crystal Lake’ looks positioned to give horror fans one of the more psychologically driven entries the franchise has attempted in years.
