‘Crystal Lake’ Showrunner Has a Plan for More Jason and Pamela Voorhees, and It Looks a Lot Like ‘Twin Peaks’

Few horror franchises have a hometown as infamous as ‘Friday the 13th,’ and Peacock’s ‘Crystal Lake’ finally gives fans a long look at it. The prequel series arrived with all of its episodes at once on Oct. 15, marking the first live-action expansion of the slasher saga in more than a decade. Now the man steering the ship is already thinking about what comes next.

The road here was far from smooth. The series was announced with Bryan Fuller as showrunner, but he exited in 2024 after A24 opted to go in a different direction. Brad Caleb Kane stepped in as showrunner, and his version follows Pamela Voorhees, played by Linda Cardellini, in the years leading up to the events of the 1980 original.

Peacock has not renewed the series yet, but Kane has been open about his plans. In an exclusive interview with Dread Central, he revealed he wants to explore the town “in sort of a ‘Twin Peaks’ David Lynch style,” a comment that is already getting horror fans talking. He also made clear he knows where a second chapter would begin.

Kane designed the first season so it could work as a complete story even if Peacock decides not to continue. He told Dread Central that he wanted it to feel satisfying on its own, but that he also knows there are more stories to tell. Critics have noted that the last episode wraps up the major mysteries and answers the big questions.

The ending also leaves a door wide open. Jason spares Pamela’s life, and the pair become a very deadly duo, which means anyone who wanders near the woods or the lake could become their next target. That setup gives a potential sequel a built-in engine.

The comparison comes down to the town itself. With a known killer on the loose and plenty of residents to meet, Kane sees room to expand beyond Pamela’s story. He has said he has a clear starting point and the general contours of a full season.

He also pointed to the show’s supporting characters. Kane told Bloody Disgusting that it is not just Pam’s story but Crystal Lake’s, and that there is “more story to tell” for the residents. He singled out figures like Ralph, Dorff and Trudy as people who could drive a more Twin Peaks-y kind of vibe.

One question fans have is how soon the series would reach the events of the 1980 film. Kane indicated that a second season would run much closer to that timeline, though it would not overlap with the movie yet. The first season charted a course toward the original film without leading directly into it.

That slower build could help the series avoid rushing toward familiar territory. It would also give the writers more time with Pam and young Jason, who is played by Callum Vinson. The longer the show stays in the town, the more room there is for the strange, character-driven storytelling that Kane describes.

Kane has also been defending one of the season’s boldest swings. The series takes a wild turn that changes what fans know about Jason, and the showrunner has said he knows the twist will be divisive. It reframes the character’s resilience in a way that is bound to spark debate among longtime fans.

That kind of risk is part of what makes the show interesting. A prequel built on a character who is so well known could have played it safe, but this one goes for something strange. Whether viewers love it or hate it, it has people talking.

If Peacock does greenlight more episodes, the creative direction looks clear. A town full of oddballs, a killer in the woods and a mother-and-son team could make for a very different kind of slasher story. For now, fans will have to wait and see whether the streamer is willing to go back to the lake.
