‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2’ Announced, and It’s Going to Get Even Sadder

The Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime is officially getting a second season. The big announcement was made at Anime Expo 2025, and fans were treated to a first look at the new poster.
Voice actors Emi Lo (Lucy) and Zach Aguilar (David Martinez) were both at the event. Writer and producer Bartosz Sztybor also joined the panel, along with a surprise visit from director Hiroyuki Imaishi. The panel was hosted by popular YouTuber and anime content creator Joey, also known as TheAnimeMan.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard from Sztybor about Edgerunners. In an earlier interview, he talked about the ideas behind the show and how it all came together.
At the Anime Expo panel, he kept things dark and funny. “I’m from Poland. People in Poland are sad. They are born sad, they die sad, so I just wanted to make the whole world sad… When people are sad, I’m a bit happy,” he said. The crowd also got to hear the iconic “I Really Want to Stay At Your House” song from the first season, which played multiple times during the panel.
In September 2024, there was already talk about a new Netflix and CD Projekt Red (CDPR) collaboration. It wasn’t clear if that was the same project, but now we know something official is coming. Still, Sztybor didn’t give fans too much hope about seeing the old main character again. “But don’t get too excited. David’s dead,” he said bluntly.
Sztybor explained that Night City has more stories to offer. He said that even when they made the first series, he had a feeling it shouldn’t end there. He added, “I wasn’t satisfied with the sadness… so I want you to be even more sad now.”
The second season will have 10 episodes, just like the first. This time, it’s being directed by Kai Ikarashi, who previously directed episode six of the original series, “Girl on Fire.” The new story is being described as “a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge.” One of the teaser quotes from the show asks, “When the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter?”
CD Projekt Red, the studio behind the Cyberpunk 2077 video game, also helped create the first anime. That one was made by Studio TRIGGER, with Rafał Jaki as showrunner and executive producer. They also released a manga spin-off last year, focusing on Rebecca and Pilar.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners originally dropped on Netflix in September 2022. It had 10 episodes and quickly became a hit. It even won awards for Best New Anime and Best Original Anime that year. The show followed a street kid trying to survive in a city obsessed with tech and body upgrades. To stay alive, he becomes an edgerunner, a kind of outlaw mercenary.
CDPR’s Joint-CEO, Michał Nowakowski, confirmed that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is coming to Netflix. He didn’t give a date but said it will arrive “in due time.”
With a darker tone and more stories to tell, this next chapter in the Cyberpunk world looks like it’s going to hit just as hard as the first. Fans of Night City have a lot to look forward to.
