Cynthia Erivo’s ‘Prima Facie’ Finally Gets Its First Trailer, and It Looks Like a Career-Defining Role

Cynthia Erivo has spent the last few years cementing herself as one of the most acclaimed performers of her generation, moving from Broadway triumphs to an Oscar-nominated turn as Elphaba in ‘Wicked.’ With that kind of momentum behind her, expectations naturally run high for whatever she tackles next.

Her latest project has been quietly generating buzz since it first premiered on the festival circuit earlier this month, adapting one of the most acclaimed stage plays of the last decade for the big screen. Now, audiences finally have their first real look at what Erivo brings to the role.

Sony Pictures has released the official trailer for ‘Prima Facie,’ the film adaptation of Suzie Miller’s award-winning one-woman play, starring Erivo as a rising trial lawyer whose life unravels after a deeply personal tragedy. The film is set to arrive in UK and Irish cinemas on November 13, following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month.

Directed by Susanna White from a screenplay written by Miller herself, ‘Prima Facie’ follows Tessa, a young, ambitious barrister who has worked her way up from working-class origins to become one of the most formidable defense attorneys in the London court system. Tessa built her reputation defending men accused of sexual assault, until an unexpected event forces her to confront the same justice system from an entirely different vantage point.

‘Prima Facie’ originally took the theater world by storm as a solo stage production, with Jodie Comer earning a Tony Award and an Olivier Award for her performance in the title role across both Broadway and the West End. Comer’s run in the play picked up four Tony nominations overall, along with multiple other honors recognizing the production’s impact.

For the film adaptation, Miller expanded her original one-woman script into a fuller ensemble piece, bringing in Daniel Ings, Toheeb Jimoh, and Noma Dumezweni to round out the supporting cast. Erivo also serves as an executive producer on the project through her own production banner, Edith’s Daughter, giving her creative involvement beyond just her lead performance.

Beyond the film’s dramatic weight, Erivo has spoken about the broader impact she hopes the story carries with audiences. “Things can feel like they’re permanent if no one does anything to shift or change them,” Erivo told Reuters about the project’s themes.

“The more we talk about it, the more we see it for what it is, the easier it will become for us to change things,” she continued. That sentiment lines up closely with Miller’s own reasons for writing the original play, which she developed out of frustration with how the legal system handles sexual assault cases.

White, known for her work on projects like ‘Andor’ and ‘Woman Walks Ahead,’ has approached the film’s translation from stage to screen with a deliberate visual strategy. Rather than simply filming a monologue, White has incorporated point-of-view shots and immersive courtroom sequences to ground Tessa’s story in a more cinematic reality.

Production reportedly filmed at real London locations, including the Old Bailey and Lincoln’s Inn, lending the film an added layer of authenticity to its legal setting. The project is a UK-Australian co-production between Bunya Productions and Embankment Films, with Sony Pictures handling distribution in the UK.

With ‘Prima Facie’ set to open in UK and Irish cinemas on November 13, the film arrives amid growing awards season conversation surrounding Erivo’s performance. A US release date has yet to be announced, leaving American audiences waiting to see exactly when they’ll get the chance to watch Erivo’s turn as Tessa for themselves.

Given the strength of the source material and Erivo’s growing list of acclaimed performances, ‘Prima Facie’ looks positioned to be one of the more talked-about dramas of the season.
