Dakota Johnson Brings Back Her Favorite Sheer Dress Formula at the ‘Verity’ London Premiere

Dakota Johnson has spent the past several years cementing herself as one of the red carpet’s most fearless dressers, consistently choosing looks that generate conversation long after the event ends. Her fashion choices have become almost as anticipated as her film work, with stylist Kate Young helping her build a reputation for daring, sheer silhouettes across numerous premieres and galas.

That reputation was on full display this week as Johnson stepped out to promote her latest film, the psychological thriller ‘Verity,’ based on Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel. The London leg of the press tour brought her to the Curzon Mayfair for the film’s UK Gala Screening, where she once again proved she isn’t afraid to make a statement.

For the occasion, Johnson wore a cream lace maxi dress by designer Colleen Allen, and the sheer floral fabric was transparent enough to fully reveal the black Fleur du Mal lingerie underneath. The plunging scoop neckline, finished with delicate ruffled detailing and fitted short sleeves, gave the floor-length gown a romantic, almost vintage lingerie feel that stood in sharp contrast against the dark undergarments beneath it.

This particular styling choice fits neatly into a pattern Johnson has followed for the better part of two years, regularly pairing sheer designer gowns with visible, contrasting lingerie on red carpets around the world. In September 2025 alone, she wore a black lace dress with floral embroidery and exposed matching underwear to the Kering Foundation’s Caring for Women Dinner, followed by a vibrant purple sheer lace Gucci dress at the Zurich Film Festival that same month.

What made this appearance slightly different was the tonal shift, trading the dramatic black-on-black looks of past events for a softer cream-and-black combination that felt more romantic than provocative. Johnson completed the outfit with her signature straight hairstyle, a black manicure, and understated jewelry, including a gold necklace, bracelet and several rings.

‘Verity’ follows Lowen Ashleigh, played by Johnson, a struggling writer hired to ghostwrite the remaining books in a series by celebrated author Verity Crawford, played by Anne Hathaway. Directed by Michael Showalter, the film also stars Josh Hartnett as Verity’s husband Jeremy, and it’s set to hit theaters October 2.

Hathaway was notably absent from the London screening, reportedly due to being in the final stages of pregnancy, leaving UK press duties to Johnson and Hartnett. That left Johnson’s outfit choice to carry much of the red carpet’s visual weight, and by most accounts, it succeeded in dominating the conversation around the premiere.

Johnson has previously spoken about her approach to bold fashion choices, telling Vogue Germany that she’s been able to wear some of the most beautiful dresses and feels beautiful in them, which is ultimately why she continues wearing them. That mindset has clearly shaped her red carpet strategy over the past several seasons, with sheer lace becoming something of a signature at this point in her career.

With the ‘Verity’ press tour still ongoing ahead of its October release, it’s likely Johnson isn’t finished making headlines with her fashion choices just yet.
