Dakota Johnson Turns the ‘Verity’ Premiere Into a Crystal Waterfall

Dakota Johnson has never treated a red carpet as a place to play it safe, and her Verity premiere look is the latest proof. She and her longtime stylist Kate Young are veterans of sheer styling, and the ‘Verity‘ press tour has been a showcase for that partnership.

Sparkle has been a through-line too. Young has previously explained that Johnson gravitates toward the shiny side of fashion, a taste rooted in watching her mother, Melanie Griffith, wear glittering gowns.

That brings us to the New York premiere on September 29 at AMC Lincoln Square 13. Johnson arrived in a custom white Calvin Klein Collection two-piece covered in crystal fringe, and iridescent sequin embroidery and a high-slit column skirt completed the waterfall effect.

Fashion writers noted that it was her second custom Calvin Klein Collection look in a matter of days, following her guest appearance at the MTV VMAs. One outlet said the outfit was inspired by the Spring 2027 runway.

Her styling kept the focus on the fringe. As the photos show, Johnson wore her dark hair with blunt bangs, a bold red lip and matching red nails, plus a delicate necklace.

The New York outfit is a sharp turn from her London appearance on September 24. At Curzon Mayfair, she wore a creamy Colleen Allen gown in delicate floral lace, with black Fleur du Mal underwear visible beneath it.

This one, by contrast, was definitely not sheer. Outlets also traced her progression through tones, from cream in London to blush Calvin Klein at the VMAs to ivory in New York.

Co-star Anne Hathaway chose a custom black Atelier Prabal Gurung gown with floral and crystal bead embroidery and an embroidered sequin skirt with a train. She is pregnant with her 3rd child, and she skipped the London premiere, which made the New York carpet the first time the trio appeared together on this leg of the tour.

Some fashion writers see the black-and-ivory pairing as deliberate, suggesting the opposing colors echo the psychological dynamic between their characters. Whatever the intent, Hathaway’s black made Johnson’s ivory fringe look even brighter in photos.

‘Verity’ adapts Colleen Hoover’s novel, which she self-published in 2018. In the film, Johnson plays Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer who moves to the isolated Crawford estate to ghostwrite for author Verity Crawford, played by Hathaway.

After Lowen finds Verity’s disturbing autobiographical notes, she has to deal with twisted confessions about Verity’s husband Jeremy, played by Josh Hartnett. Michael Showalter directs from a screenplay by Nick Antosca.

The night drew a full crowd. Hathaway, Hartnett, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Showalter and Hoover all attended the New York premiere, and the film opens in US theaters on October 2.
