‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Star Matthew Lillard Confronted by Fan at Horror Convention: “You Lost Me as a Fan”
Matthew Lillard found himself in an uncomfortable moment during a recent horror convention when a fan took the microphone and confronted the actor about an encounter from years ago.
The incident happened during a Midsummer Scream panel in Long Beach, California, where Lillard was taking part in a reunion celebrating the 30th anniversary of the original Scream. The event also featured Skeet Ulrich, Jamie Kennedy, Lee Waddell and other members of the horror franchise.
Videos of the exchange were shared on social media after the event. In the footage, an unidentified man can be heard telling Lillard that they had met several years earlier.
The fan said he had tried to share a theory with Lillard about a connection between Scream and the 1995 movie Mad Love. Both films feature Drew Barrymore, although she plays different characters named Casey.
According to the fan, Lillard did not take the theory seriously at the time and responded by asking, “What were you smoking?” Years later, the man decided to bring up the encounter in front of the convention audience.
“The way you made me feel…when you told me that, you kind of lost me as a fan,” he told Lillard. “I just wanted you to know that.” Lillard appeared to pause for a moment before responding with a short joke. “What a great question,” the actor said.
The exchange continued, although parts of the conversation were difficult to hear because of the crowd. The fan appeared to tell Lillard, “I always had a thing for you,” before once again saying, “Yeah, you lost me as a fan. Thank you.” The audience reacted with loud boos as the man finished speaking.
Lillard then moved on to another group of fans. From the stage, Jamie Kennedy tried to get the actor to explain what the confrontation had been about. Lillard did not want to discuss it further. “It does not matter. Next question!” he replied.
One Instagram user who shared footage of the moment defended Lillard and wrote, “Protect Matthew Lillard at all costs. This is not okay.”
The awkward exchange happened during a major weekend for Scream fans. Midsummer Scream brought together several people connected to the original 1996 movie to mark its 30th anniversary.
Lillard remains one of the most recognizable faces from the franchise. His character, Stu Macher, was revealed as one of the original Ghostface killers alongside Ulrich’s Billy Loomis. Stu appeared to die at the end of the first movie, but the character has continued to be a major part of Scream fan discussions.
Lillard also returned to the franchise for Scream 7. The latest movie revealed that another character used AI technology to create a deepfake version of Stu’s face during communications with Sidney Prescott, played by Neve Campbell.
For now, the convention confrontation appears to be a brief but memorable moment from an event that was otherwise focused on celebrating one of horror’s most popular movies.
