Netflix is preparing to release a new true-crime documentary, My Father, the BTK Killer, which tells the story of infamous serial killer Dennis Lynn Rader through the perspective of his daughter, Kerri Rawson. The film will premiere on October 10.

The trailer for the documentary gives viewers a glimpse into Rawson’s experience, including moments around her father’s arrest and her emotional journey after learning the horrifying truth about him.

The project is directed by Skye Borgman, who is known for her work on Unknown Number: The High School Catfish and American Murder: The Family Next Door. Borgman told reporters that the film aims to be factual while also exploring the deep emotional impact on Rawson.

Dennis Rader, born March 9, 1945, became known as the BTK Killer for his method of “bind, torture, kill.” He murdered at least ten people in Wichita and Park City, Kansas, between 1974 and 1991.

While he occasionally targeted men and children, his main victims were women. Rader’s crimes involved binding his victims with items from their homes and killing them through strangulation or suffocation. He also sent letters to the police and media, taunting authorities and describing his crimes in detail.

After a long period of silence starting in 1979, Rader resumed communication in 2004. This ultimately led to his identification and arrest in February 2005. He pleaded guilty to ten counts of murder and is serving ten consecutive life sentences at El Dorado Correctional Facility.

My Father, the BTK Killer promises an intimate and raw look at the story from the perspective of someone who knew him personally. It focuses on the horror of his actions as well as the challenges faced by his family in coping with the aftermath.

Documentaries like this aim to show the human side of crimes that often get reduced to headlines. According to Borgman, the goal is to give viewers both the facts and an emotional understanding of the impact.
