Dave Bautista is stepping into the world of Road House. According to Nexus Point News, the actor has officially joined the cast of Amazon MGM’s upcoming sequel to the 2024 action remake that starred Jake Gyllenhaal.

While details about Bautista’s role haven’t been shared yet, sources say he’ll be playing a former fighter, someone who shares similarities with Gyllenhaal’s character, Dalton. The sequel will also introduce a mostly new cast, which means most of the actors from the first film aren’t expected to return.

Jake Gyllenhaal first talked about wanting to return for a sequel back in March 2024. Just two months later, the sequel was officially confirmed to be in development, with Gyllenhaal set to reprise his role.

Amazon MGM Studio head Jennifer Salke said that work on the project was already underway. In April 2025, director Guy Ritchie entered the picture and was confirmed later that month to lead the project. The script is being written by Will Beall, known for action films like Aquaman and Bad Boys: Ride or Die.

Then, in July 2025, things shifted when Ritchie left the movie. Not long after, filmmaker Ilya Naishuller was reported to be in talks to take over directing. The studio hasn’t made an official announcement about the change yet.

The original Road House remake, which gave the 1989 cult classic a modern spin, got mixed reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, it scored 60% based on 205 critic reviews, with an average rating of 5.6 out of 10. The site’s critics’ consensus read, “Road House updates a cult classic for a new generation, happily replicating the original’s emphasis on cheesy brawn over narrative brains.” Metacritic gave it a score of 57 out of 100, based on 46 reviews, describing the response as “mixed or average.”

Even with the mixed reaction, the film gained attention and set the stage for a sequel. With Gyllenhaal returning and Bautista now on board, the next Road House looks like it’s ready to raise the stakes with new faces and fresh action.
