While filming James Gunn’s Superman, things got unexpectedly intense between stars David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, but in a fun and surprising way. During an interview with People magazine, the two actors shared some behind-the-scenes stories from working together on the movie.

Brosnahan, who plays Lois Lane, praised her co-star, saying he was “a really fearless actor” and that he was always exploring different parts of his character. That’s when Corenswet, who plays Superman, jumped in with a story that caught even him off guard.

“She made me curse at her,” he said with a laugh. “The way she delivered one particular line made me sort of involuntarily say, ‘Oh f**** you,’ which I think was a shock to all of us. She got me. She caught me off guard and made me feel really hurt in that moment. And so I, in character, shot back at her.”

Corenswet didn’t say which exact scene it was, but it probably happened during the major interview moment between Lois and Superman—one of the film’s key scenes and something they both used for their auditions. Critics have already called it one of the standout moments in the movie.

That wasn’t the only time things got loud on set. In a separate interview for GQ, director James Gunn shared a funny bit about working with Corenswet. He said the actor liked to ask a lot of questions, sometimes a few too many.

“Sometimes his questions are great, and I totally see where they make him better, and because they make him better, they make the movie better,” Gunn said. “But every once in a while, it’s just one question too many, and it’s like, ‘Oh, my God, just, David, stop, stop, for a minute.’”

Gunn said their working relationship is strong because they understand each other. He added, “When I say, ‘David, shut the f*** up,’ David totally gets it and does not take that personally.”

The director also pointed out that Corenswet is different from many other actors he’s worked with.

“I’m used to being very sensitive with actors. You have to be, because many actors are incredibly sensitive because they’re putting their emotions on the line onscreen,” he said. “But with David, he’s not that way. He’s not sensitive like that.”

Superman, directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, is now playing in theaters across the world.
