David Henrie Teases a ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’ Movie That Could Finally Answer Fans’ Biggest Questions

Just days after ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place‘ closed out its final season, star David Henrie is already dangling the possibility of more magic ahead. For a franchise that has spent nearly two decades weaving in and out of Disney Channel’s biggest hits, the door to Waverly Place apparently isn’t shut for good.

The four-part series finale wrapped things up with the Russo family defeating the villainous Nicodemus, but not every storyline got the closure fans were hoping for. Among the biggest lingering questions is the fate of Mason Greyback, Alex Russo’s werewolf ex-boyfriend from the original series, whose death was revealed in the finale with little explanation of the circumstances surrounding it.

David Henrie teases the possibility of a ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’ spin-off movie that could explore unresolved storylines, including Mason’s death, his breakup with Alex Russo, and the reveal of the Russo family’s new wizard. Speaking to TV Insider, Henrie explained that a feature film could finally give those dangling threads the attention they never got room for within the show’s final, shortened season.

Addressing the choice to kill off Mason rather than fully explore what became of his relationship with Alex, Henrie offered some insight into the creative reasoning behind the decision. He said, “I think we’ll have to explore [all that] in a movie… Mason was a werewolf. He had been around a long time. It was his moment to pass on. And Alex then found another love and started her family. It’d be tough because their relationship was so strong. We could’ve been like, they got in a fight, they broke up, and then she married this other dude. I think that might have pissed people off even more.”

Henrie’s comments suggest the show’s creative team weighed multiple options for how to close out Alex and Mason’s story, ultimately deciding that a clean, symbolic ending felt more respectful to the character than a messier breakup narrative might have. That reasoning tracks with reporting that Henrie discussed alongside the reveal, where he noted co-star Jennifer Stone believed fans would have reacted even more negatively had Mason simply been written off without dying.

The idea of a follow-up film isn’t coming out of nowhere. Henrie has spoken previously about the franchise’s potential for expansion, describing the ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’ universe as “such a fertile universe” with plenty of story left to tell. Selena Gomez, who reprised her role as Alex Russo throughout the spinoff’s run, has echoed similar sentiments about wanting to keep the door open for future installments depending on audience response.

Beyond Mason’s unresolved fate, Henrie’s comments also point to a movie potentially addressing the still-mysterious identity of the “new wizard” set up in the Russo family’s extended storyline, giving fans another concrete plot thread to watch for should a film move forward. For now, no such project has been formally announced by Disney, but Henrie’s remarks suggest the creative team hasn’t ruled out revisiting this corner of the Wizards universe once the dust settles on the finale.

With the flagship series now concluded and plenty of loose ends still hanging in the air, fans of the Russo family may not have to say goodbye for good just yet.
