Marvel officially revealed Jonsson as the franchise’s new Black Panther during its Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con on July 25. He’ll play Toussaint, the son of the late King T’Challa, stepping into a role built directly around continuing Chadwick Boseman’s legacy rather than replacing it outright.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige described his own reaction to Jonsson’s casting in personal terms, saying he “got chills, and I got a little welled-up” before greenlighting the decision. Ryan Coogler, who directed the previous ‘Black Panther’ films, is returning to helm this installment as well, with the movie set for release on December 15, 2028.

Before Marvel came calling, Jonsson had already established himself as one of Britain’s most versatile rising talents. He earned acclaim for his role as investment banker Gus Sackey in HBO and BBC’s ‘Industry,’ and led the Sundance-premiering romantic comedy ‘Rye Lane.’

His profile grew further with a turn as the synthetic character Andy in ‘Alien: Romulus,’ a performance that showcased both comedic timing and dramatic depth. That range appears to be exactly what drew Marvel to him for a role carrying this much emotional and cultural significance.

Jonsson won’t be stepping into Wakanda alone. Letitia Wright is returning as Shuri, and Winston Duke is reprising his role as M’Baku, giving the new film a built-in connection to the world audiences already know.

Duke reportedly assured Jonsson he was “here to support and help him” navigate the transition, while Wright noted that the two of them are “still checking in with each other about it,” suggesting the cast is approaching this new chapter with genuine care rather than treating it as a simple recasting.

Ahead of his MCU debut, Jonsson has already lined up another major project, joining the voice cast of the animated family film ‘Bollywoof’ alongside Olivia Colman. The film follows a British Springer Spaniel separated from his family after being placed on the wrong flight to India.

With more than 2 years still to go before ‘Black Panther 3’ arrives in theaters, Jonsson’s growing public profile is likely to keep drawing attention well before his first scene as Toussaint ever reaches the screen. On stage at Comic-Con, Jonsson kept his own reaction brief and heartfelt, telling the crowd, “thank you, Ryan, thank you, Kevin, thank you to this amazing family,” a moment that quickly circulated among fans processing the announcement in real time.

The casting carries added weight given how personally the ‘Black Panther’ franchise has always been tied to its cast and crew, particularly following Boseman’s death in 2020. Choosing to build the next film around Toussaint rather than recasting T’Challa directly gives the story a built-in emotional throughline, framing Jonsson’s arrival as a continuation of the character’s legacy rather than a replacement of it.

That approach appears to have resonated with fans online, many of whom have spent the months since the Comic-Con announcement digging into Jonsson’s earlier work and following his public appearances closely.
