David Letterman is defending Seth Meyers after President Donald Trump called for the NBC host to be fired. Trump attacked Meyers on Truth Social following a recent monologue on “Late Night With Seth Meyers.”

He wrote that Meyers suffers from “Trump Derangement Syndrome,” claimed his show is a “Ratings DISASTER,” and demanded NBC fire him immediately. The post was also shared by FCC chair Brendan Carr.

In a new appearance on “The Barbara Gaines Show,” Letterman praised Meyers and his work. “I’ve never been more proud of Seth Meyers,” he said. “That’s our old show, as a matter of fact. Yeah, we used to do that show, and he does a magical job.” Letterman also referenced Trump’s response to a reporter’s question about the 2018 killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, advising Meyers: “But just remember Seth, things happen. You know what I’m saying?”

Letterman didn’t hold back when discussing Trump’s behavior. He called the president “just a wonder of idiocy” and referred to him as “our dictator” who is “not going anywhere.” He added, “It’s like 18 times the worst behavior one has witnessed ever anywhere. Think of the worst thing that you’ve ever seen humans accomplish. This is so much worse.”

Meyers has become Trump’s latest target among late-night hosts, following repeated attacks on Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert. Kimmel’s show was briefly suspended in September after comments about the death of Charlie Kirk but returned a week later. Colbert’s “The Late Show” is set to end in May 2026, though CBS insists the decision was financial and not politically motivated.

Letterman’s defense of Meyers comes as tensions between late-night hosts and Trump continue to make headlines. It highlights the ongoing debate over freedom of speech and political commentary in entertainment.
