David O. Russell’s Nicolas Cage-Led ‘Madden’ Just Got a New Teaser, and the Release Date Finally Shifted

Amazon MGM Studios has been quietly building anticipation for one of its most unusual awards-season bets in years, and the latest promotional push suggests the streamer is ready to make some noise. What began as a Christmas Day teaser drop nearly a year ago has now evolved into a fuller marketing rollout, complete with a notable change to when audiences will actually get to see the film.

The project reunites Nicolas Cage with a filmmaker known for chaotic, high-energy character studies, pairing him with Christian Bale in a story that swaps courtroom drama or crime thrillers for the unlikely world of NFL coaching and video game history. Given David O. Russell’s track record with awards-friendly ensemble pieces like ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ and ‘American Hustle’, expectations for how he handles this real-life sports story have been building steadily since the project was first announced.

A new teaser for David O. Russell’s ‘Madden‘ has been released, confirming Nicolas Cage stars as legendary NFL coach John Madden in a film now set to premiere globally on Prime Video on November 18. That date marks a shift from the film’s previously reported Thanksgiving 2026 release window, moving the premiere up by roughly a week from the November 26 date that had circulated since the project’s first teaser dropped last December.

The film follows Madden’s journey from his Super Bowl-winning partnership with Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis, played by Bale, through his eventual transformation into the co-creator of one of gaming’s most enduring franchises, Madden NFL. Cage stars in the title role, charting Madden’s path from a coaching career cut short by the physical and emotional toll of the job to becoming one of the most recognizable voices in football broadcasting.

Rounding out the cast, John Mulaney plays Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins, the man behind the video game partnership that would eventually cement Madden’s name into pop culture permanently. Kathryn Hahn portrays Madden’s wife, Virginia, while Sienna Miller plays Al Davis’ wife, Carol, and comedian Shane Gillis rounds out the ensemble in a previously undisclosed role.

Madden’s connection to the Thanksgiving holiday runs deep within NFL culture, with the league honoring his legacy through its Thanksgiving Day broadcast slate for four consecutive years running. That connection made a late-November release date feel especially fitting for the project, even as the film’s premiere has now moved slightly earlier than originally planned.

On the field, Madden coached the Raiders to a Super Bowl XI victory in 1977, amassing a 103-32-7 record across ten seasons before stepping away from coaching and transitioning into broadcasting. His later partnership with Electronic Arts helped launch what would become one of the best-selling video game franchises in history, a legacy the film appears determined to treat with the same weight as his on-field accomplishments.

Behind the scenes, the production drew scrutiny after reports surfaced that several actors and crew members walked off set in May 2025 following an incident in which Russell allegedly used a racial slur and attempted to insert it into the film’s dialogue. That controversy adds another layer of scrutiny to a director already known for a history of on-set friction throughout his career.

With Cage’s dramatic physical transformation into the role already drawing attention from early trailer footage and a starry supporting cast rounding out the production, ‘Madden’ looks positioned as one of Prime Video’s higher-profile awards-season plays this fall.
