DC Boss Peter Safran Has a One-Word Answer on Whether ‘The Batman Part II’ Will Resume Filming
Few superhero sequels have had a stranger road to the screen than ‘The Batman Part II.‘ It has been delayed, rescheduled and finally started shooting, only to hit another bump. For fans following the journey, the question of whether ‘The Batman Part II’ filming will pick back up has become the central worry.
The release date alone tells the story. The sequel was originally dated for October 2, 2026, then moved to October 1, 2027, and now sits at February 18, 2028. Writer-director Matt Reeves finished the screenplay with co-writer Mattson Tomlin in June 2025, and cameras finally rolled this past summer in the United Kingdom, with locations including London and Liverpool and additional work on Warner Bros. soundstages.
Then, on October 5, production paused. DC Studios and Warner Bros. said filming was temporarily halted while Reeves focuses on a family matter, adding that he has the full support of DC Studios and that the studio looks forward to continuing the journey soon. No timeline was given for a restart, which left many fans wondering how long the break would last.
Now DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran has offered the most direct reassurance yet. In an interview with IGN, he was asked, carefully, whether there was any scenario where the film wouldn’t start filming again. His answer was a single word: “No.”
Safran also brought up the movie on his own while running through DC’s plans. He acknowledged that everyone is aware of the issues the production is having right now, but he said what the studio has seen of the shoot looks fantastic and called Reeves a supremely talented filmmaker. That praise matters because it is a rare on-record comment about the footage.
The interview also touched on a scheduling quirk: DC will have 2 Batman movies in theaters in 2028. Safran noted that the studio is aware of the overlap between ‘The Batman Part II’ and ‘Dynamic Duo.’ The animated film’s release date recently moved to September 22, 2028.
The comments come after Warner Bros. came under Skydance ownership, which has led observers to question how the change might affect DC’s upcoming projects. Safran’s blunt answer suggests the sequel remains firmly on the studio’s agenda. He offered no new restart date or details about the production schedule in the portion of the interview that has been published.
The cast is already assembled. Robert Pattinson returns as Bruce Wayne, joined by Colin Farrell, Andy Serkis and Jeffrey Wright, with Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Jayme Lawson, Gil Perez-Abraham, Sebastian Koch and Brian Tyree Henry also on board. Reports indicate that second unit work has continued even while the main shoot is paused, which could help the film’s chances of holding its release date.
Pattinson addressed the situation on October 13, saying that the production is pausing for a little while and that the team will figure things out. He has previously described the sequel as a real left turn from the first film and said it will be very different. He has also said it would be tough to have his version of Bruce outside its own world, which cools talk of folding it into the DCU.
For a project with this many delays, a clear statement from a studio chief carries weight. Fans had grown wary after years of date changes, and a new pause naturally stirred anxiety. Safran’s one-word answer doesn’t fix the timeline, but it does shut down the idea that the film could be abandoned.
James Gunn has also pointed out in the past that long gaps between major sequels are standard in Hollywood, citing franchises such as ‘Alien,’ ‘The Incredibles,’ ‘Terminator,’ ‘Avatar’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ That context doesn’t make the wait easier, but it suggests that patience is part of the process. For now, the focus is on Reeves and the support around him.
The February 2028 date should be treated as provisional until the studio announces more details. A short break could cost only a few weeks, while a longer one might shift the schedule. Either way, the studio’s message is that Gotham will be back.
Do you think The Batman Part II will meet its February 2028 release date?
