German actor Lars Eidinger has been officially cast as Brainiac in the upcoming DC Universe film, “Man of Tomorrow,” James Gunn confirmed on Instagram. Gunn wrote, “In our worldwide search for Brainiac in ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ Lars Eidinger rose to the top. Welcome to the DCU, Lars.”

Brainiac is a super-intelligent alien android known for his obsession with collecting knowledge and controlling planets. In the comics, he has been shown shrinking entire worlds and storing them in glass containers, destroying any that don’t meet his standards. Created in 1958 by writer Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino, this film will mark Brainiac’s first appearance in a major DC movie.

David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult are set to return as Superman and his co-star characters. “Man of Tomorrow” is scheduled for release on July 9, 2027. Gunn previously teased the film with a photo of Lex Luthor and Superman appearing unusually friendly, hinting that the two may team up against Brainiac.

Eidinger, known for his recent role in Noah Baumbach’s award-season contender “Jay Kelly,” has also appeared in films like “Dead Language,” “The Light,” and “Dying,” which was nominated for Best Film at the 2024 Berlin International Film Festival. He is represented by UTA.

“Superman,” Gunn’s directorial debut as co-head of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, premiered on July 11 and became the highest-grossing superhero film of 2025, earning over $616 million worldwide.

It’s exciting to see a new and talented actor like Eidinger take on such an iconic villain. Brainiac’s introduction could bring a fresh and thrilling challenge for Superman in the DCU. What do you think about this casting choice? Share your thoughts in the comments.
