DCU’s ‘Clayface’ Teases New Trailer With Unsettling Gotham City Promo Art
James Gunn’s DC Universe has spent the past year carefully building out its slate beyond the usual capes-and-cowls formula, mixing traditional superhero fare with genuinely unexpected genre experiments. Few of those experiments have generated as much curiosity as ‘Clayface,’ a project that took even longtime DC fans by surprise when it was first announced.
That surprise only grew once the film’s first trailer arrived earlier this year, revealing a body-horror take on the classic Batman villain unlike anything the studio had attempted before. With the film’s Halloween-adjacent release date creeping closer, marketing has understandably started ramping back up in recent days.
New promotional art for ‘Clayface’ has surfaced online, showing a moody, silhouetted Gotham City skyline dripping in dark, clay-like sludge beneath the film’s blood-red title treatment. The stark, atmospheric image has fans speculating that a new trailer is likely on the way in the near future, given how close the film’s release date has become.
That timing tracks with how DC Studios has handled the film’s promotional rollout so far. The studio unveiled its first teaser trailer back in April, giving audiences their initial look at Tom Rhys Harries’ disfigured actor-turned-shapeshifting villain, before following up with a fuller trailer release in July ahead of that summer’s Comic-Con.
‘Clayface’ follows Matt Hagen, played by Harries, an up-and-coming actor whose rising career and matinee-idol looks are cut tragically short after a run-in with a Gotham crime boss leaves his face horribly disfigured. Desperate and abandoned by his own team, Hagen turns to a scientist played by Naomi Ackie, who offers him an experimental treatment that restores his appearance but comes with a devastating cost to his grip on reality.
Director James Watkins, known for ‘Speak No Evil,’ is helming the project from a screenplay written by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini. Flanagan’s involvement traces back years, with Gunn previously revealing that DC Studios had no specific plans for a Clayface film until Flanagan submitted a script the studio considered one of the best it had ever received.
The film rounds out its cast with David Dencik, Max Minghella, Eddie Marsan, Nancy Carroll, and Joshua James, alongside Ackie and Harries in the lead roles. Unlike Matt Reeves’ separate ‘Batman’ franchise, ‘Clayface’ exists firmly within Gunn and Peter Safran’s core DC Universe continuity, positioning it as a genuine building block for the studio’s larger shared world rather than a standalone side story.
‘Clayface’ is currently set to hit theaters on October 23, having shifted from an earlier September date to better align with the studio’s desire to capitalize on Halloween season moviegoing. That timing mirrors recent post-Labor Day horror successes like ‘The Nun’ and ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,’ both of which found strong audiences by leaning into the same autumn window.
The release date also positions ‘Clayface’ just weeks ahead of Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman: Part II,’ giving DC Studios back-to-back opportunities to keep Gotham City’s rogues gallery in the cultural conversation heading into next year. With a reported production budget of around $40 million, the film represents a comparatively low-risk bet for the studio compared to its larger tentpole releases.
Given how distinctly ‘Clayface’ has set itself apart from typical superhero marketing, this new promotional art suggests DC Studios is preparing to lean even further into the project’s unsettling, body-horror aesthetic as release day approaches. Whether that means a full trailer drop in the coming days or simply another piece of atmospheric teaser content remains to be seen, but the timing certainly lines up.
